OBITUARY: From Dowagiac Times 17 November 1897
Stanley Stewart, who resided on the corner of High street and
New York avenue, expired at his home Thursday morning at 2:15 o'clock.
Stomach trouble was his fatal ailment. Mr. Stewart was an ex-soldier
and had been assisted in his later years by the blessing of a large
pension. For a great many years he had been an almost helpless invalid,
suffering from rheumatism. He was born in Chemung county, New York, in
1833, June 30th. In 1855 he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth
Meyers in New York state. To this union were born four children, the
two oldest of whom still survive him. His wife died many years ago, and
in 1884 he was again married, this time to Orilla Cannon, who died in
1889, leaving one child which is now living. In 1891 he was married for
the third time, this time to Marie Emmons of this city, who was with
him at the time of his death. When the civil war broke out, Mr. Stewart
was one of the first to respond to his country's call, becoming a
member of the New York volunteers, and served throughout the war, being
honorably discharged with a record of excellent service. He was a kind
neighbor and an honest and respected citizen, who will be
missed among his large circle of friends. The funeral was held Friday
p.m. at one o'clock at the late home, on the corner of High street and
New York avenue, Rev. Wyrick of the Church of Christ officiating.
Interment was had in Allen cemetery, Silver Creek township.

OBITUARY: 6-29-32 CHAS. STEWART TAKES LIFE
AT RURAL HOME
Apparently seized with a sudden fit of despondency over ill health
Charles Stewart, 75, prominent lifelong resident of this section, took
his own life at his home seven miles north of Dowagiac at 11
o'clock this morning. He went to his front lawn where he placed
the muzzle of a 22-calibre rifle in his mouth and fired, death coming
almost instantly. The shooting was witnessed by a driver of an oil
truck. The tragedy proved a terrible shock to his family and many
friends, for while he had been in ill health for years, he gave no
indication of despondency and a short time before the deed had been
chatting cheerfully with neighbors. Coroner A. E. Thompson, of
Paw Paw, responded to a call and recorded the case as
suicide. No inquest will be held. Dr. W. R. Lyman and Chief
C. O. Burch of Dowagiac were
called, but there was nothing to be done. The body was brought to
the Robinson-McLauchlin undertaking parlors. Funeral arrangements
had not been made early this afternoon.
Mr. Stewart was well and most favorably known by hundreds of people in
Cass and Van Buren counties, as well as by many tourists who have met
him at his roadside stand which he has operated for years. In
recent years he had suffered several reverses, losing considerable
money in unfortunate investments, losing his old farm home by fire two
years ago, and by developing an illness that lasted for several
years. In years gone by Mr. Stewart proved very successful in his
farming enterprise. He is perhaps best known to many as a
newspaper correspondent, work which he followed up to his death. His
final list of items from Hamilton appear in today's Daily News,
and among them is a notice of his being treated for illness by a
Dowagiac doctor. In the old days he wrote his news under the name
of "Hank Teeter" and they were widely read in many newspapers in this
section.
He was married 55 years ago and his widow survives. Other
survivors are the following daughters: Mrs. Zeborn Linton, of
Springfield, IL., Mrs. Belle Kimball of Chicago, Mrs.
George Mirkle of Silver Creek: Mrs. Albert Himmelwright, who
lived next door to the Stewart home and Mrs. Bessie Marshall,
north of Dowagiac. There are several grandchildren and
great-grandchildren living.
