CENTRAL PARK BICYCLE CLUB

==> FLASH!! <==

We had some questions on stunt riders seen at the Park and elsewhere. Our Midtown Manhattan bicycling community does have stunt riders trained for emergency, marshalling and safety supports, and performance services. All are professionally trained. DO NOT try to do stunt or performance riding without much training and practice for the high traffic areas of Central Park and nearby;

This is the CENTRAL PARK BICYCLE CLUB, a facilitative organization given through auspices of the NYC Departments of Public Health and of Parks and Recreation to coordinate and organize bicycling throughout CENTRAL PARK and adjoining neighborhoods. We enhance this webpage as time and resources allow.

Weekly schedule: Every Saturday morning we meet at the location given with the newsletter. If you are not on our fax or emessage listing, please em us at floor10@iname.com or fax our fax number or write to us on the guestbook below with a contact reference.

Usually from 1 to 7 local bicycle clubs such as New York Cycle Club, Century Race Club, Fast and Fabulous Club, Five Borough Bicycle Club, Team Squiggle, Stitch and Bitch Riders, several professional bicycle education & training groups**, and many other riders meet to coordinate A, B, and C level and training rides. During spring and summer the NYC core group for the {{BOSTON to NEW YORK AIDS RIDE}} joins to coordinate training rides. On Sunday mornings we meet from 8:00am to 9:30am outside the LOEB Boathouse at Central Park for contact as before with our public health liaison capacities.

**Terry Chin leads a professional bicycle training service near Loeb Boathouse Bicycle Rentals most weekends during regular riding weather (about midMarch through November). He has worked with the NYC Federation for Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Alcoholism service and Health Department with outreach and community health and education programs and with one hospital community services. He is a very good teacher for beginners and has over 20 years experience with nearly all levels and kinds of beginning riders. Ask for his program brochures at Loeb Boathouse and the Bicycle Rental Booth. Several other training programs affiliated with specific bicycle shops use Central Park. Check the shops for program specifics, affiliations and promotions, equipment agreements, and training focus and experience. Some are with even Olympic athelete members.

February 24 CENTRAL HARLEM RENNAISANCE

March 3 CLOISTERS

We especially recommend for a grand ride stop for beverage or light food, "MARGIE's RED ROSE TEA SHOPPE", on West 144th Street just round the bend from Frederick Douglas Boulevard heading easterly. Breakfast. lunch, soul food, good food!!

Other info:

"A" rides are near racing level training events that require thorough conditioning.

"B" rides are for those who train and have some race experience but are not to near top form.

"C" rides are for group ride beginners and novices who have little organized ride experience but are conditioned to ride 20 to 40 miles reasonably easily with appropriate rest stops and guidance.

"Cmax" rides are recreational for intermediate to experienced riders with interests in touring and exploring various endsites for their community, historic, natural beuaty, and uniqueness and for some adverturneering. Ride routing is by the leader. But individual riders must monitor their own riding and request rest or toilet stops as part of the preparation and activity. Safety and fitness are features.

As promised, here is the listing reference for locally based head injury survivor and community group. If you've ever survived head injury or are concerned about knowing what may happen, check it out. The group may be reached through the New York Academy of Sciences Neurosciences Section at 212-838-0230.

The CENTRAL PARK BICYCLE CLUB is not affiliated with a number of organization with similar names or acronyms. See: click here

The CENTRAL PARK BICYCLE CLUB, a community based organization serving multiheritage needs of the United Nations neighborhoods and recognizes and appreciates the heritage traditions for all nations. We also serve student bicycling groups and welcome those who use our PARK neighborhood responsibly.

We have worked for a number of years with the CENTRAL PARK CONSERVANCY and CITY DEPARTMENTS that administer the PARK ENVIRONMENT and that keep it safe and habitable for all PARK visitors.

The CENTRAL PARK BICYCLE CLUB evolves from long term work by myself, advisor and head to the club, on field epidemiology and issues on health and fitness for a number of populations. During 1967, I wanted to design a performance bicycle for my own special needs. I did the science and engineering on paper but had no lab. So for a long time all I had was a paper bicycle (not much for fitness and health, eh??). Then, during 1982, I helped develop a long distance bicycle touring club. I "destroyed" several bicycles with that and some mountain bicycle training projects. Finally, during 1987, I was informally invited to help with the NYC public health services and eventually the CENTRAL PARK BICYCLE CLUB developed. While the CLUB appreciates bicycling's racing focus and its ability to motivate, we also recognize many persons respond much differently to directed activity. The measurement of health and fitness and successful general health and mental health outcomes is a highly challenging and specialized field requiring years and years of training and experience. Thank you for your thoughtful attentions.

HAPPY BICYCLING TO YOU!!

Bits and Pieces

(July 25th, 1999) Today, several bicycle clubs from outside New York City visited us. THIS IS A GREAT THING!! WELCOME!! One point, we usually gather on Sunday mornings between about 8:00am and 10:00am (or earlier for races and extra long day rides). Please be careful, after 10:00am the LOEB BOATHOUSE RESTAURANT nonbicycling clientele begins to arrive. And all our bicycles can be a bit much for Park regulars from the Manhattan neighborhood communities as well as all the other local and guest patrons. PLEASE try to assure if you meet at the LOEB BOATHOUSE Picnic Area to be sure after 10:00am to allow passage in and out of the restaurant to all and politely. THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!

Cold Weather HYPOTHERMIA Reference

If you bicycle during cold weather and feel any sensations like frostbite(loss of sensation in toes, fingers, exposed skin(face/hands, etc.)) or pain from cold or if you just begin to feel very, very cold, you may be experiencing hypothermia's first effects. Get to a warm place as soon as possible or wrap with many, many layers. The good answer is to make a very warm, not hot, about 101 to 105 degress F bath, and soak until your full body temperature returns to normal. Also, drink hot liquids. Hypothermia can be very serious so take it seriously. And get professional help if you feel at all unsure of how you feel.

We enabled a message board and chatroom system at the linkage area. We've tested and had successful chats. {{Currently off service due to assistant manager leaving.}}

About the NEW YORK TRIATHLON CLUB, this organization uses Central Park for several sporting events during the year with a focus on high performance SPORTS and from an experienced amatuer point of view regarding related medical and mental health needs. They have well organized and enthusiastic events that attract a wide range of SPORTS people.

HOWEVER, the Central Park Bicycle Club evolves from PUBLIC HEALTH (health and mental health) needs and serves the midManhattan and Central Park neighborhoods for health and recreation services to such groups as children, senior citizens, people with disabilities as well as all the challenging disease conditions from breast cancer to leukemia to epilepsy and multiple sclerosis to anxiety stress response to anemia and AIDS/HIV survival to simple aging. We assure you we are NOT a SPORTS group but a RECREATIONAL FITNESS and HEALTH/MENTAL HEALTH activity. We encourage your regular participation with responsible fitness activities serving individual needs. And we thank you for your attention to the difference between the two, SPORTS vs. PUBLIC HEALTH, and for appreciating that difference.

from 10.24.98 to 08.26.99. The processor continues with a reasonable reliability for moderated hours and those with no moderator. There is some access control lack as we had a sign on a create a GAY ONLY chat area. The Central Park Bicycle Club welcomes all preferences as long as they respect others, too. We have one GAY focus bicycle club. But as an outgrowth of our work with the City Departments, we must assure access to all preferences. Personally, we welcome all bicyclists who bicycle safely and responsibly. Our larger problems come from poor, unsafe, and irresponsible bicycling. Usually NYC advocacy for human rights uses other more effective forums than our bicycle club focusing on bicycling needs. We ask if you set up a special focus forum you assure an all purpose one is open at the same time. THANK YOU!!!!!

Transportation Alternatives

The local Manhattan community advocacy group, Transportation Alternatives, advances a number of important issues regarding the environment and safety for all of our Central Park recreation and fitness communities. While they do not address health or mental health, they are very active regarding how transportation impacts Central Park and NYC.
