The National Spelling Bee is a wonderful experience for around 250 kids
every year starting from the Sunday before Memorial Day. It involves much fun,
trips, and provides a chance for kids to meet other spellers just like
themselves. They are all competing for one trophy, but no one goes home a
loser. Most spellers don't concentrate on the trophy. The preliminary
rounds to get to Washington D.C. are usually tough, so the spellers are usually
just happy to be there. Presently, I keep in touch with as many spellers as I
can, and like myself, they loved the NSB! We became such good friends that we
are planning a reunion for years to come. So you wanted to know how I placed?
Sure I'll tell you. First things first: the word I missed. I got out on aitch.
Yes, it means the letter 'h!' I missed in the eighth round, which was enough
to propel me to a tie for fourth place. Along the way, I spelled the
following words: soubise, microfiche, atavistic, nullibicity, bordelaise,
cuneate, epipelagic, and finally aitch. I sat there on that stage on May
27th and 28th for around 11 hours, starting at 2:00 P.M. on the 27th,
concluding the third round at about 6:45 in the night, to start competition
again the following morning at 8:00 in the morning. I was escorted off of the
stage at 3:16 P.M. later that day. So, that's about all about spelling bees
that I have to say!
