Q & A

What is The African American Future Society? What is the objective of the Society? Is the Society closed? Why should we concern ourselves with the future? What are alternative Futures? What is the aim of the Society?

Q.

What is the African American Future Society? When and why was it formed?

A.

The African American Future Society is a channel whereby the insights of African Americans and others contributing to the research of the future can be disseminated to governmental and business leaders, to teachers, to students, and to everyone who might benefit.

The rapid pace of technological change has led to important and long lasting effects on American economic and social conditions. As a result, a growing number of African Americans have begun to think more seriously about their futures and how to anticipate changes before being overwhelmed by them. In this new climate of interest, the African American Future Society began to take shape on the City of New York in the Winter of 1992.

The Society is a neutral information resource that serves as a clearinghouse for data, ideas about the future, and a forum for many conflicting views. The Society is fundamentally non-partisan in character; it does not advocate particular ideologies or engage in political activities.

Q.

What is the objective of the Society?

A.

Q.

Is the Society Closed?

A.

The Society is open to everyone because everyone has at least some interest in the future and everyone is helping to shape man's futue

Q.

Why should we concern ourselves with the future?

A.

Why? Because the future will directly affect you, positively or negatively. You can influence and change the future in ways that no one else can. We can do nothing to change the past, but collectively we have enormous power to shape the future. As we join together we will form a responsible network of human concern to develop alternative futures.

Q.

What are Alternative Futures?

A.

We are guided by the alternative future(s) that is / are most favorable to us, and choose the course of action to make that alternative future more likely to exist. The unfavorable future(s), that is also an alternative, causes us to choose the sourse of action that makes the future unlikely to exist. As Society members, we shall investigate the changes in technology and society that are affecting us, and develop favorable alternative futures.

Q.

What is the aim of the Society?

A.

The aim of the Society is to inform African Americans and others in the possible ways in which the future may impact their lives, and to provide alternative future(s) planning and development.
