Hello, my name is Albert Brown. I served on board the U.S.S. Nicholas
DD449 during WWII and would like to give you some of her history.
U.S.S Nicholas (DD449) Destroyer, named for Major Samuel Nicholas, U.S.M.C
was built by the Bath Iron Works Corp, Bath, Maine. She was authorized
May 17, 1938, launched February 19, 1942, and first Commissioned
June 4, 1942. Engine miles steamed from date of commissioning to VJ Day
236,405 miles. After WWII, she was placed in mothball for a short rest
period, then recomissioned as a DDE. I dont know the date of her being
placed back into active duty, but she went on to be in the Korean War,
Viet-Nam, and other locations. She was in 33 major battles in all of
Her war histories. In WWII, She was in the war with Japan from 1942 at
Guadalcanal to VJ Day in Sept 2, 1945.
At the end of WWII, She had the honors of being the American Destroyer
that met the Japnese Destroyer, Hatuzakura, and picked up Japanese emissaries
off O Shima Island and transported the emissaries to the U.S.S. Missouri
And proceeded into Sagami Wan Japan. She was the first American Ship to enter
the harbor and anchored. On Aug 29, 1945 she anchored in Tokyo Bay getting
ready for the big day of the signing of the peace treaty. Details will follow
on the next page. She was scrapped and a new Nicholas was built and now sails
the seas in protection of our country. She is a (FFG) carrying on the great
tradition of the famous name of the U.S.S. Nicholas.
(These pages are still under construction)
