Writing For ROAR:

The first thing I want to say is that you do not need to be any particular sex, race, or occupation to write for ROAR, although you do have to be 13 or older. If you are a writer, you gotta be a subscriber, though, so here's how it works: Simply subscribe first! Click here, send the email, and then you're all ready to apply to be a writer! We really appreciate your interest! :-) Read on, especially the last paragraph before the form.

SPECIAL SITUATIONS: Occasionally we at ROAR are lucky enough to get a professional writer or an adult who wants to share their wisdom with us. If you are 18 or older, any sort of special deal can easily be arranged directly with the editor, Mira, by e-mailing her at ROARZine@aol.com if you would like to share something with us (you can click on the address at the bottom of the page, or on the address bolded above). You can go through the process below if you like (which actually might be helpful to us), but it is not at all neccisary.

TO EVERYONE ELSE - Including Subscribers:

ROAR is great because aside from the awesome articles it offers, it also offers its subscribers a practically unlimited ability to put their stories, poems, thoughts, etc into our column called "Reflections." We even allow them an opportunity for the spotlight if we pick their piece to feature for that issue.

But what if you want more?

What if you want to really write for ROAR? Well, you may be in luck - because when we changed from "Expresso" to "ROAR" we also changed our policy that the focus be totally on Reflections and that no one but the editors (as there were two co-editors then) would write for it. Now we need new ideas - fresh columns. And we need fresh, new writers to go along with them.

But hang on - it ain't that easy . . .

Of course, we have to be selective in who we allow to write for us, and also we have to limit the number of writers on staff. Right now (and this might change as soon as tomarrow!) we have many slots available to aspiring writers.

Also . . .

Remember - we are a non-profit magazine. We are run by teen girls (although there is a possibility of exception to this rule for writers - so apply even if you're not a teenaged girl!) and we don't pay you anything. It's not big and legal and official - all that is too scary for us to deal with. This whole magazine is something we all do for FUN! So choose a column you want to write and enjoy it!

Do I sense a catch?

Maybe - because there are responsibilities. We tend to be given a lot of problems with this part - and because we are so busy working on ROAR and leading teenage lives, we can't deal with writers who can't be responsible. If you join our staff, your "boss" will be Mira, the editor, and only Mira. She's fun and understanding and she's friends with all of the writers so far, so don't be afraid. But ROAR does need you to do a couple of things:
First of all - there are deadlines. We need you to be responsible about these - but we always give you LOTS of advance notice about theses dates.
Secondly, you need to give Mira a quick synopsis of what you want to do for that issue. She'll promptly let you know if its approved (if it isn't, she is more than willing to help you with ideas) and then you can go ahead with it.
Also, you need to do a certain amount of writing each time. This doesn't mean 2,000 pages of professional writing. This usually means 1/2-3/4 of a typed, single-spaced page. No big deal. This depends on what column you write, so it will need to be discussed.
Oh yeah - and there's also the issue of policy. This is not a huge big deal because we've never had problems with it before you need to be sure that your writing doesn't violate the ROAR policies and mission statement. Don't freak - this is hard to do - but it is important. If you read the rest of this site you oughta know that it can't be racist or sexist or sexually explicit or any of that.

Alright already! (Sheesh!) So how do I become a writer?

OK - here it goes: Click on the link at the bottom of this paragraph to get to the form. We'll respond and let you know if you were accepted. You MUST fill out the questions with a star (*) by them. Remember, unlike the subscription form, here, you are applying for a staff position. You'll find that we need more info about you here than we did there. Also - You must first be a subscriber to apply for a writing postion!
