Carroll Shelby designed high-performance Mustangs for Ford starting in 1965.
Shelby and Ford stopped working in 1970, but not before Shelby introduced
the biggest and most exciting Mustang ever. The 1969 Shelby GT-500. Shelby produced both GT-350
and GT-500 models during 1969 - 1970. This was the first year that Shelby
Mustangs bore little resemblance to there production counterparts. The
GT-350 was equipped with a 290 horsepower, four barrel 351 Windsor, modified
slightly by Shelby. The GT-500 borrowed the 1968 King of the Road Mustang's
355hp engine with ram air induction. Now that's some serious power. The
interior was basic Mustang with the addition of a pair of gauges for oil
pressure and amperage.
Only a handful of Shelby's were produced during the 1969-70 model
years, 3930 total, 1,536 GT-500 Fastbacks were produced as pictured above.
