Bruce Willis Making Vonnegut Film

.c The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Bruce Willis wants to dream a little bigger.

The action star's Rational Packaging production company is making a movie out of Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s 1973 novel ``Breakfast of Champions.''

``This film is kind of outside the Hollywood box,'' Willis said in Friday's Los Angeles Times. ``But every once in awhile I've got to satisfy myself. I can count on one hand and not use my thumb the number of films in the last couple of years that I looked forward to going to work every day.''

Willis said ``Breakfast of Champions'' is ``some of my most bizarre work.'' It also stars Nick Nolte, Barbara Hershey and Albert Finney.

A release date has not been scheduled.

The big article (multiple pages) appeared in the LA Times last week
I saved the hyperlink, but apparently LA Times doesn't keep their stories
longer than a day or so, so my hyperlink goes to a dead end.
The article was called A Die-Hard Dreamer
You may be able to e-mail the LA Times for a copy of the entire article.
It is a very important discussion about Bruce Willis' new MOVIE STUDIO
in which he will produce movies that he wants to make, own the rights to
these movies, and sell them independantly to major studios for distribution.
He will be doing another project with Alan Rudolph, based on a screenplay
which Rudolph is currently working on. Production may begin in February.

Wait til you see "Breakfast Of Champions"!
Its a really cool movie!

Rubin/Walker Acquire Remake Rights From Parasol Group To Classic World War II Combat Film, A Walk in the Sun'

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Inspired by the international success of Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan" which has single-handedly revived the moribund combat film genre, producers Steve Rubin ("Combat!") and Dana Walker have acquired exclusive motion picture and television remake rights to the classic World War II combat film, "A Walk in the Sun," it was simultaneously announced today by Rubin/Walker and Nathan Sassover, CEO of Parasol Group LTD, a Munich, Germany-based multi-media company which holds the rights to a $30 million library of film and TV properties. Parasol's U.S. subsidiary is Applause Networks Inc., based in Los Angeles. The underlying rights to "A Walk in the Sun," including the original novel, the screenplay and the music soundtrack are all owned by Parasol Group.

Rubin and Walker plan to offer the project immediately as a smaller budget combat film in the $5-10 million range. "We feel the timing is excellent," says Rubin, who is currently co-producing the World War II film "Combat!" as a possible Bruce Willis vehicle at Paramount. "Dana and I feel strongly that given the classic status of the original, plus the enormous international interest in the World War II film genre fueled by 'Saving Private Ryan,' we'll quickly find a home for a 90's 'Walk in the Sun.'"

Walker added, "With its emphasis on character, the film will offer a number of terrific roles and we already have some very fresh ideas on how to cast them."

The original "A Walk in the Sun," produced and directed by two-time Academy Award(R)-winner Lewis Milestone ("All Quiet on the Western Front") and written by Academy Award(R)-winner Robert Rossen ("The Hustler") from the best selling 1944 novel by Harry Brown, was released by 20th Century-Fox in 1946. The last combat film produced during World War II, it starred Dana Andrews, Richard Conte, Lloyd Bridges, John Ireland, Huntz Hall, Sterling Holloway and Norman Lloyd.

Based on Brown's wartime experiences as a correspondent for Yank, the tense story follows a platoon of GIs who, after losing their commanding officer on Salerno Beach in Italy, must regroup and move inland to capture a strategic farmhouse. When their sergeant loses his nerve, an untested non-com named Tyne (ANDREWS in the original) rallies them for the climactic assault. Hailed for its realism, this compelling and honest account of life amongst combat soldiers on the Italian Front is considered one of the finest books to come out of World War II.

Rubin and Walker plan to package the project with the goal of releasing the film in early- to mid-1999.

In addition to "Combat!," which is currently in development at Paramount, Rubin is the co-executive producer of "The Errand Boy," the Jerry Lewis remake also currently in development at Disney with producers Roger Birnbaum and Tom Jacobson. He also holds an option on the classic Sam Fuller Korean War film, "The Steel Helmet," for which he is developing a 1990s story with partner, producer Becky Arntzen. Walker is an entertainment lawyer and industry executive, who has served in various management positions with CBS Entertainment, ICM, Arthur Company & Associates and Scripps Howard Productions.
