Sixty-five million years ago dinosaurs walked the face of a lush and fertile planet. A complex, highly evolved ecosystem thrived. Then a piece of rock, only six miles wide, hurtling through space, altered the course of natural history forever. An asteriod. It struck the Earth with an impact equal to ten thousand nuclear weapons detonating simultaneously. The shock hurled a trillion tons of dirt and rock into the atmosphere. A blanket of dust spread, blocking the sun for ten centuries. It will happen again. It's just a question of when.
I address you tonight not as the leader of a country, but as a citizen of humanity. We are faced with the greatest of challenges. Some have said we have reached the day the bible calls Armageddon. the end of all things. And yet, for the first time in history of the planet, a species possesses the techonolgy to prevent its own extinction. All of you listening and praying with us tonight need to know that everything we can do to prevent this disaster is being called into this service....The human thrist for knowledge and excellence; our every step up the ladderof science; every adventurous reach into the heavoens; all of our combined modern technologies and imaginations; even the wars we have fought; have given us the tools to wage this terribe battle....Through all the chaos that has ever been our history, through all the wrong, and discord, the pain and suffering, through all our times, one thing has nourished our souls and elevated our species above its origins. That is our courage....Tonight the dreams of an entire planet are focused on the fourteen brave souls traveling into the heavens....Godspeed and good luck to you. And may we all, the world over, see these events through with a dignity and perseverrance worthy of the challenge.
