Wells Band Colony of Western Shoshone - Research Department

Founded and Established November 24, 2000

Our Purpose & Function

The Wells Band Colony Research Department was developed to address the need of providing vital, truthful and factual information and history of, about and for the Western Shoshone Nation of Newe Sogobia.

The purpose and function of the Research Department is to engage the many avenues of information available, buried, believed to be lost or unavailable, that pertain to Native American history, ancestry, culture and society; to compile and archive this information in a library format and at times to present this information on request to the Wells Band Council, researchers, academic institutions and students.

There will be no charge or fee for doing the actual research, however, upon request for copies of the findings, along with copies from the archives, there is a minimal fee for such attached to cover the materials needed to do so. The fee is determined by the amount or quantity of the materials used to produce the requested information.

This department uses an ‘out-reach’ communication program in an effort to make available the information within its archives and its services to all Western Shoshone People as well as other Native American Colonies, Tribes, Reservations and/or Nations.

This Department is dedicated to providing such information as mentioned in an effort to aid all those who seek the truth about our people and our nation in an academic and educational format. Many of the things we research are archived throughout this web site and either posted or published as the need demands. Much of this is provided in hard-copy to the Wells Band Council, Wells Band Members and their Families, the Wells Band Attorneys, the Shoshone National Council and all those who either need or request it.

We provide this information in its original form as we find it or as the technology will permit us.

At times we will modify our findings in the areas of typos and grammer when necessary, otherwise, we take no liberties with altering any content or the meanings therein.

Overview
Research has as its main goals the process of locating and gathering of coherent, verifiable information and evaluating that information, most importantly, the timely reporting of that information.

It is a real life situation. In all cases we need to find relevant information, organize it so that we can see what is most relevant to our needs, and come to a conclusion as to how we should proceed.

In assisting others to develop their research skills we, therefore, help them to better their thinking skills, and the clear expression of their thoughts which leads to the development of becoming better human beings.

The processes involved in doing research are important learning experiences that should not be taken too lightly.

As one selects and narrows their topic, chooses their sources, separates fact from opinion, eliminates unnecessary information, and organizes their materials, they will refine their thinking and analysis skills to offer a better completed work.

Doing research allows one to explore a particular topic in considerable depth and to organize and clearly express that information.

Native American Education
We believe that our purpose is extremely beneficial in addressing the needs of younger students in staying in step with the endless changes that face them in the world today. This is an area they are not often afforded in the non-native public educational systems. We also provide the same quality of education through our resources for the adults who have never had the opportunities available to them in the past and help them to advance at their own pace. These things will lead to significant improvements in the academic performance of all Native students everywhere. And, with that, open the doors of opportunity to acquire better jobs or careers that will do nothing short of personal improvement to which will add to the quality of life for the entire community. We also aid in the understanding and application of Indian self-determination and economic well-being along with a renewed approach in native language and culture.

The Research Department provides a safe and psychologically comfortable environment for students, on or off-line, which also includes an intellectually challenging atmosphere that offers any student, no matter their grade level or age, opportunities to maintain and develop a firm knowledge base.

Our primary goal in this department to enhance the knowledge of all the Shoshone People with our history, the treaties, the laws and our relationships with other Nations, whether it be in the United States or the World. This will provide us a position to present and represent ourselves and manage our affairs on an even playing table with these other nations and their representatives well into the future.
