not sure what the street is called) has incredibly cheap art materials, rub on
letters, old vidocassettes, fabric, everything. and if you are really hard
pressed for cash, it is also incredibly easy to steal from. just take all you
can carry and walk out.

- Solano ave...a yuppie telegraph. every store is up for grabs. i dont know why
they dont check t heir cameras or anything but they obviously dont. free food,
pens, everything.

- el cerrito recyling center..people bring books they dont want here. its not
stealing...its just free.

Showers, Places to stay, Etc…

There are not many community showers that I know of in the Bay Area. If I was
traveling I would just take a few dips in Berkeley’s community pool and get
clean that way…I’m pretty sure there is a shower in their as well. Its on
Telegraph Ave. and its in a big red building with a mural painted on it.

There are plenty of welcoming people in the Bay Area. If you are wanted to stay
at someone’s house, I suggest posting when and where you’d like to stay on the
 Bay Area Messageboard. Soon
enough, there will be a warehouse from S.P.A.M. Records and Alternative Tentacle
Records as well, with touring band space and living space. It will be cheap and
you could pay by the week or the month. 1-510-BAD-SMUT. You can leave a message
and contact info for the warehouse. It won’t be ready until the end of
2002/beginning of 2003.

As far as camping and squatting, there are really first come first serve. If
you can find any abandoned house in Berkeley/Oakland/S.F. go for it…unless its
in a nice area. If you make too much noise, you know the drill…Camping would be
somewhat hard, trying to decipher where its legal/illegal to camp. There is

golden gate park in S.F. Plenty of homeless, squatters and tourists live here
for quite sometime.

Entertainment:

Gilman Street: This is a club for anyone to go to as long as they follow the
rules. There are shows every Saturday and Friday night, starting at 8 p.m. It is
a $5 door charge and $2 membership fee. You can get to it right off Highway 80
(take the GILMAN STREET EXIT) and easily by BART. There are several way to get
here from bart, but I would suggest the free, short, bike path. Get off at
NORTH BERKELEY BART by using the elevator (method 3 – see the Bart section
above). Cross the parking lot until you see a big, white building. Go past the
building and look for the sign “Ohlone Trail “share the path!””. Go all the way
down, past the basketball hoops, past the park, past tennis courts and follow it
all the way until you reach houses. Cross the street and go past a red + white
house, until you reach this weird statue with information on it. There should be
a nursery as well. There will be another sign for the path, and go down it.
After you reach the end of that stretch, you!
will be on Gilman street. Make a left, past San Pablo Ave. all the way to 8th
and Gilman. There you are!

Telegraph Ave: Now, I personally think this street has became commercial,
expensive, and not worth seeing. But most travelers come here and want to see
what it was all about. Get off at DOWNTOWN BERKELEY BART station. Find
University Ave. (there should be a map outside of the station) and go up it
towards the hills. Make a right on Telegraph Ave. That should be it. One good
thing is amoeba records..

Mission Records: This record store usually has shows on weekends and a vast
array of records. Get off 16th and mission Bart station and walk up Mission
towards thrift town. Go down a few blocks (3 I think) until you see the blue
tile and “Mission Records” sign. They aren’t always open, but you can go
shopping around there for cheap clothes, cheap burritos, and donughts and
Chinese food in one restaurant!

Taco trucks and resturants: So the cheapest, vegan, healthiest way to eat
around the Bay area is BURRITOS!! If you are ever in Oakland, Hayward, San
Leandro, or just about anywhere in the east bay, there are thousands of taco
trucks for under $3.00 per burrito. You have to look for them though…they are
never in one definite place. There is always the mission district (16th and 24th
mission BART stops) with plenty of taquaillas for you to choose from. El
Forolito (24th and Mission), Taquailla Cancun (across from Mission records),
taquailla La Cumbre (16th and Valencia – one street up from Mission St.)
