The Carthusian Order is a contemplative-monastic order of monks and nuns within the Roman Catholic Church. The order was founded in 1084, in the diocese of Grenoble, France, when St Bruno and six companions presented themselves before St Hugh, bishop of Grenoble, requesting to live an eremetical way of life within the bishop's diocese.

To that end, St Hugh led Master Bruno and his companions to a desolate valley in the French alps. It was in this isolated place, far removed from town or village, that the first Carthusian family was formed and a monastery was eventually constructed which is known today as La Grande Chartreuse.

The seed which St Bruno planted in the wilderness of the Chartreuse valley blossomed and gave to the Church one of the most austere religious orders which has survived to the present day.

Although the Carthusian family is small, compared with other religious orders, it has nonetheless produced saintly men and women which the Church recognizes as worthy examples of holiness. Counted among Carthusian Saints and Blesseds are seven bishops and eighteen martyrs.

While this website presents those saints recognized by the Carthusian Order and the Church, it falls short of the numerous Carthusian holy men and women whose sanctity is known only to God.
