Canyon Light

From the sky, Light, as blue as a gas flame, torches pieces of the landscape.   From the canyon wall behind us, orange light paints the pool and seep-streaked walls.

I visited this canyon on Sept 18, 2000 with a good friend.   I travelled light, with just my Pentax 35mm camera and my Mamiya twin lens reflex C220, as I had hopes of returning in the spring.   We arrived at the Escalante River at dusk.  The water in the river looked murky with visibility down to four inches--beyond that, I couldn't tell if we might step into six or sixty inches of water and I had visions of wet cameras and lenses.  The next morning, we found that the mean depth didn't exceed 16 inches and we waded downstream to Neon Canyon.  ©2000 Jeffrey Wong
