Trailhead directions to Coyote Buttes

COYOTE BUTTES, NORTH SECTION, PHOTO TRIP

FROM LAS VEGAS:  Drive NORTH (northeast, actually) ON I-15 TO HIGHWAY 9 a few miles NORTH OF ST. GEORGE, Utah.  Other signs indicate this as the road to ZION NP.

GO TO HURRICANE.   Follow the signs (in town, a right turn off hwy 9 onto Main Street, then a left after only one block) to Fredonia, Kanab and GrandCanyon/ LakePowell etc.   You missed this turnoff, if hwy 9 bends left and you cross the Virgin River into La Verkin.  You made it if the road begins to climb, climb, and climb.

You will go thru Colorado City and Hildale (they shouldn't slow you down for more than 10 seconds)--wave to the polygamists .  At Freedonia, go north (left) to Kanab on 89.   At kanab turn right on 89 heading east.   I highly discourage speeding on any road and especially this road.   FURTHER, if you pass through here in the dark and see the “deer” warning signs, I would recommend high beams and slowing to 55 mph or less.   (I struck a deer here in April 1998)   37.8 miles from the Kanab signal light, almost immediately after mile marker 26, take the dirt road that leaves the pavement to the right.   You missed the turnoff if the pavement begins to wind down and to the left.

go down the dirt road, passing the trailhead and Buckskin Gulch parking area (4.5 miles on the left and you may not see the sign in the dark) and some minor roads that take off from the right.   The road will wind but not much. about 8.5 miles after leaving the pavement you’ll come to the Wirepass Trailhead on the left, parking area on the right, where you’ll camp.  You’ll either find me there with my coral red Volvo wagon, if we didn’t ride share with others in the party;  or I'll get there realllly late due to work, or something and see you in the morning.   To see what I look like click here

Drive carefully.
