1850 Mary Ana SMITH-STOEL died after the 10 October 1850 census. At the time of the census she was living in Burlington, Racine Wisconsin. She died in Spring Prairie Township, Walworth County, Wisconsin. She was the sister of David R. SMITH. Her husband Nathan STOEL "on March 17, 1850 started for California Overland." We know in the spring of 1850 Gold Fever was sweeping the country. We also know from William Nathan STOEL's biography that Nathan STOEL was in California Mining. We also know Mary Ana SMITH-STOEL was 5 months pregnant when he left, as her son William Nathan STOEL was born 17 Aug 1850. Did he leave her behind? Yes. Did he know she was pregnant? Most likely. What happened to the children after she died?
Some of her children were raised by David R. SMITH and Elizabeth HARTLEY-SMITH.
William Nathan STOEL born 17 Aug 1850 was five years old when he came to live with David and Elizabeth where he grew to adulthood. William Nathan STOEL married Adda L. ROOKER. They made their home in Baker City Oregon.
