Saturday, 22 JULY 1871 Contra Costa Gazette ** MISSING **
Mr. Wilburn BURRESS of this place, who for some time past has shown symptoms of insanity, left here some 3 weeks since and went to Santa Barbara county, where his wife is temporarily residing with a married sister. While there, he manifested more decided symptoms of insanity, and about the 15th inst., started by the Gilroy stage on his return. Between Buenaventura and San Antonio, he jumped off the stage several times and attempted to run away, and by persuasion of passengers was induced to return; but before reaching San Antonio, jumped off again and escaped into the woods. 2 days afterward he made his way into San Antonio, where he was cared for, and sent forward by stage to Gilroy, the driver and passengers having much trouble to prevent his jumping off and running away again. After reaching Gilroy and dining at the hotel, he slipped away and has not since been seen. On information of his condition received here by his friends early this week Mr. L.E. TOLLADAY started immediately to find and take him in charge; but after several days search in the vicinity of Gilroy, could get no tidings of him and so returned, hoping to find him here. The friends of the unfortunate man anxiously desire to learn where he may be, and will be thankful for information of him sent to the address of Oliver BURRESS or L.E. TOLLADAY, Pacheco. In height the missing man is about 5 feet 11 inches, light complexion, light brown hair and beard, and 32 or 33 years of age. 1871, Saturday 12 August, Contra Costa Gazette Newspaper published in: Pacheco, Contra Costa Co., CA Article: - At a meeting of Hercules Lodge, No. 307, I.O.G.T., [International Organisation of Good Templars ] held Saturday evening Aug. 5th, the following officers were installed for the ensuing term, by Lodge Deputy, H. Jan. 6, 1907: A storm rolling in from the ocean stalled above the Central Coast where it remained for four days, leaving the Lompoc Valley soaked with 7 inches of rain. Before the ordeal ended, train tracks and ties were torn up, the Robinson Bridge that had been enlarged the year before, collapsed. In addition to the Lynden schoolhouse being lifted from its foundation and smashed into kindling, 40 acres of cropland were washed away. On the positive side, though, thousands of acres were layered with rich black sediment, the gophers were gone and Lompoc Valley’s flower industry began. Link: Santa Maria Valley Times
