Charles Gabriel was born at Belle's Mill near Red Bluff in Tehama County California in 1862 the son of Andrew Jackson Tolladay. We don't know much about Charles youth except that he was among the first Tolladay's born in California. The family had emigrated over the Oregon Trail from Grundy County Missouri in the 1850's. California was a tough territory to live in. The Tolladay's were farmers by trade, but soon found upon their arrival to California more reliable income in the Lumber and Flour Mills, and in the Cattle industry. From Don we have found more precious details about Charles Gabriel Tolladay's death and the subsequent decision for his branch of the family to settle in the Madera area. "Charles lived for a time in the Walamath Valley in Oregon and was a blacksmith there. He married Henrietta Louise Tibbey. Then, sometime early in 1900 they traveled south through California down to Madera. (Just 22 miles north of Fresno). There Charles died from injuries after being kicked in the head by a mule (he was in his 40's). He was buried in the Arbor Vita Cemetery in Madera along with his wife Henriette Louise ( she lived to 88 years). Don believes as does other family members that they were going to Lompoc, where other Tolladay's (Lemuel Evans Tolladay) lived to settle there."

Imagine how devastated Henrietta and the children must have been. Alone, without their beloved husband and father they chose to go no further. She would not, they would not, leave another lonely grave behind as a testimonial to the Pioneer struggle and loss. She stood strong and they stayed. Source: Don Tolladay son of George Jackson Tolladay. According to Don, the Patriarch of the Tolladays in the Fresno area was Andrew Jackson Tolladay. Andrew Jackson Tolladay had three sons. Delbert "Kit", James and Charles Gabriel. Charles Gabriel married Henrietta Louise (Tibbey) and had five sons and one daughter. Bert, Harry James, George Jackson, Theadore G., Edwin F. and Jessie. Bert had no children, he was married to Zelma and they both lived near Bend, OR. Edwin (Chub) was [a widower] when he died and they had no children. Jessie married Philip Wren. They lived in Fresno and Don believes they are buried here.

From Rex Tolladay, s/o Harry, g s/o of Charles, gg s/o of Andrew we have learned that Salantha's last name is WATTS. Rex has a copy of Charles Gabriel's death certificate. This document lists Charles Gabriel Tolladay's mother's name as Samantha (Salantha) WATTS.
