Descendants of Andrew Jackson Tolladay

Tolladay Mountain
He walked with a deliberate and steadfast gate
Two Thousand miles - to the Golden State.
To the evergreen forests, where fresh water streams,
greeted the weary traveler, and restored his dreams.
He strode through the forest, and declared with elation,
Symbolizing the heart and soul of the nation,
Let history record, this pioneer sought no fame,
Just a home on a mountain, in the Tolladay name.
-- Diana Tolladay

Descendants of Andrew Jackson Tolladay, whom the mountain in Shasta County, California is named for. Pictured from left to right Edwin "Chub" "Doc" Tolladay, Harry Tolladay, Jessie Tolladay (Jessie Tolladay's last name at that time was Wren) , Henrietta Tibbey Tolladay; mother of the others in the photo, Theodore "Ted" Tolladay, Bert Tolladay, and George Jackson Tolladay. The photograph was taken in the 1950's.

Andrew was a son of Solomon Tolladay and brother of Lemuel Evans Tolladay. Andrew was born in Ohio in 1830. The family moved west from Ohio to Illinois and then to Missouri between 1830 and 1840. While living in Mercer County Missouri, gold was discovered in California, and the family began to notice thousands upon thousands of families and gold seekers traveling through Missouri on their way to Independence and the gathering place for those headed west on the Oregon Trail. Sometime after 1850, the family decided to head out on the Oregon trail themselves. There is no evidence that the Tolladay's were involved in Gold-Rush mania. In fact, they are listed as farmers, and cattlemen in Tehama County, California records. Sometime after 1900, the family began to migrate south to the San Joaquin valley . . .

Family Branch Researchers:
Nancy Tolladay-Smith, is the grand-daughter of George Tolladay, great-grand-daughter of Charles Gabriel Tolladay great-great-grand-daughter of Andrew Jackson Tolladay who was a son of Solomon Tolladay. According to her family Andrew married a woman named Nancy, and their children were Charles Gabriel Tolladay, James Tolladay and Delbert "Kit" Tolladay. Nancy's dad told her at one time that the Charles Gabriel Tolladay family was in the process of moving to Lompoc when Charles died in an accident in Madera, and that's why they settled there. Kind of sad, and interesting, too.

From Don Tolladay, son of George Jackson Tolladay we add the following information: Andrew Jackson Tolladay's second wife's name was Nancy Deers or Dears and she was born in Kentucky. George A. Tolladay remembered her sitting outside the house smoking a corncob pipe. George A. Tolladay's two uncles names were James Smith Tolladay and Delbert "Kit" Tolladay. George A. Tolladay remembers they lived in Fair Oaks, in the Featherland Valley, OR as working cowboys for a time.
