And believe it or not, it's sponsored by the National Model Railroad association (NMRA).

Vermont Country Store
http://vermontcountrystore.com
A throw-back to the days (before companies like WalMart ruined many small town shopping areas) when you got your groceries, housewares, medicine, hardware, mail and local gossip on the same block, or even the same building! This company sells practical, hard-working stuff for the home and garden. Who else do you know who sells new non-electric, manual typewriters? (The wesbite lists only a sample of their products, so request a copy of their mail order catalog).

Lehman's
http://www.lehmans.com
This is the company that supplies many of the Amish (and nearly anyone else living "off-grid") with non-electric lighting and appliances. Their hard copy catalog has many items not listed (or shown) on their website, so request a copy.

Cumberland General Store
http://www.cumberlandgeneral.com
Even more "off-grid" supplies, and probably Lehman's only real competition!

Old Farmer's Almanac
http://www.almanac.com
One of the oldest annual publications (founded in 1792!) for actual and wanna-be farmers and homesteaders in the USA. Loaded with great information, this is also a source ads for very useful businesses and services.

The Mother Earth News
http://www.motherearthnews.com
The on-line version of the long-running magazine. Articles on living a more agrarian life, and loving it. Good source on how-to information and advertisements. Once a true "back-to-the-land" publication, it has mellowed since being sold to new interests.

Backwoods Home
http://www.backwoodshome.com
Founded by several people who left Mother Earth News after it was sold to other interests. This is more "down and dirty" information for the "back-to-the-land" movement. Some of the editorial content might be more on the "politically incorrect" side (including columns by the one and only Claire Wolfe!).

One place to consider visiting is Christiania (http://www.christiania.org); a self-proclaimed city-state located in Denmark. What began as a squatter's camp at an abandoned Danish army base is now either a "cultural experiment" or "hippie enclave" (depending on who you ask). They've been there for close to 20 years, so they must be doing something right!
This site is graphics heavy, so be patient while it's loading. Also, the English content is a bit fractured.
