The GREG Interview

As a part of March 1999's Feature, N.V. interviewed four prolific online Noromos (via e-mail). This section was later expanded to include almost all (if not all!) great Noromo webmasters. One of the later interviewees was Greg Lawson, the creator and updater of Mulder & Scully Hate Each Other (MASHEO). The interview was divided into 3 parts - Greg as an X-Phile, Greg as a webmaster and lastly, Greg as an a human bean.

an x-files fan PART ONE: AS AN X-FILES FAN

When did you start watching The X-Files?
Hmm ... I got started pretty late as far as Philes go. Probably around season 4. I had plenty of friends to catch me up though.

Just off the top of your head, some classic episodes?
Oh, Geez, I'm terrible with names of eps ... I'm used to saying "You know, that one with ... "
Musings
Red and the Black
Humbug
Bad Blood -- (Shaft! ... can you dig it?)

How long have you realised you were a Noromo? What do you think about the whole Shippers vs. Noromos thing?
I really didn't realize that I was a noromo until I could conceive of the idea that a human being could actually WANT Mulder and Scully together -- the idea was so ludicrous that I was forced into my official noromo stance. (In other words, when my friend Jeff started to go wacko on me about six months ago.)

What was your opinion on the movie, and in particular, ~~that scene~~?
I enjoyed the movie. I guess I really didn't come with any particular expectations so I had a good time. "That scene"?? Poor writing? Selling out? Toying with those unenlightened? Call it what you will. I mean, you can easily enough chalk it up to the characters being exhausted and stressed etc (and you have to in order to have the scene make sense in context), but basically it just doesn't belong there.

How do you feel about the characters now (eg, are you a OBSSEsor, a Mulderist, a Frohike Liberationist)?
I have to say, if MASHEO wasn't MASHEO, it would have been a CSM page. Something just too appealing about that character ...

X-F links you love to death?
the standards really ...
Bee Squad
Dawgtoons
LOON
Acacia Archive

What are your thoughts on fanfic? Do you read it regularly, write it? If so where is it archived, under what name?
You know, I've never really been into fanfic. I have enough problems keeping the X-files straight without bringing in any more cool ideas/episodes. I have a ton of respect for those who write it and keep it circulated. But it's just not my cup of tea.

a brainflash! PART TWO: AS A WEBMASTER

How old is your site now?
Hmm ... 3 months maybe? Hold on ... nope. It's been 4 months -- somewhere around mid-Janurary was my first pathetic attempt. It's gone through some major revisions, of course. The most official release of MASHEO was probably about 2 months ago.

What inspired you to create your site?
The sudden and horrible realization that EVERY LAST FRIGGIN' ONE of my friends from back home was damned shipper! And what was worse, they slowly came to realize that I was the only Noromo and came gangin' up on me -- constant emails, pics, phone conversations. The bombardment was almost unbearable ... until I decided to retaliate. I knew something big was needed. I knew extreme measures were necessary ... and thus MASHEO was born.

Do you still enjoy updating it and looking after it?
It's hard to keep it as up to date as I'd like, but yeah, I still enjoy doing it. It's funny, I never thought that people would actually come and visit it or like it. MASHEO really started out as an excercise in HTML while making my shipper friends mad. I'm glad that people like it -- and it gives me an opportunity to continue my web-designing skills ...

Have you had much interesting feedback from it, made any new friends / enemies?
I believe, "Hell yes" is the only appropiate response. Certainly new friends -- the Noromo community has been overwhelmingly supportive. Thank you to all of you! Enemies? Well, I have received many a flame already -- shippers that tell me that I shouldn't be allowed to watch The X-Files, people that tell me that I'm taking everything out of context and that Mulder and Scully really don't hate each other (dur! really?). But I think the fact that so many people can be sincerely offended by the MASHEO site is really a sad commentary on a culture that wants to live vicariously through the characters of a TV show. If you're actually offended by the site, you need to stop watching television and movies altogether. (Sorry, bit of a rant there ...)

In your experience, what has been the best thing about being the creator of MASHEO?
Finding out that going to the MASHEO extreme is a relatively new concept for noromos. Just having come up with something new for people to enjoy has been the best part of all.
