PAI GOW TILES

The translation of PAI GOW is MAKE NINE

When playing Pai Gow with Tiles comparisons to Pai Gow Poker are lost as soon as the dice are shaken. This game is played with 32 special domino-like tiles. The game also depends on properly setting two hands. A High hand and a Low hand.

The Deal

Play is begun with the dealer shuffling the tiles. Most dealers go through a ritual shuffle that is a pure pleasure to watch. When the dealer completes his shuffle, he creates eight stacks of four tiles each. The dice are shaken in a cup and the order of the “deal” is established. The dealer occupies the number one position. The player position numbers advance around the table in a COUNTER-CLOCKWISE direction from the dealer. The total of the dice determines the start point of the “deal”. If the total of the dice is more than eight, the count continues around the table. Therefore the dealer occupies position number one, eight and fifteen. The dealer distributes four of the tiles that have been previously set into eight stacks to ALL player positions. If no player occupies a position, the tiles for that position are set aside. It is up to the player to then set his hand.

Setting the Hand

All players play against the dealer. There are only three different ways that four tiles can be played. The skill of this game now comes into play because your hand must be set in order to get the best possible combination in your two “hands”. Statistically, this means that you only have a one-in-three possibility of playing the hand correctly without changing the order. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that before you take a seat at the Pai Gow table, you have a good understanding of the tile ranking and what the acceptable combinations are. Once you decide on how your hand is to be set, you turn the tiles face down in two different sets. This is the signal to the dealer to turn his tiles over and set his hand. After the dealer sets his hand, he will turn over your two sets. He will then compare his best set with your best set, next he will compare your second set with his second set. In Pai Gow, You must either win or lose BOTH hands to either win or lose. If you win one set and lose the other, the hand is a tie and your wager is saved. If either of your hands is the better than the dealer’s, you lose that hand, and consequently, lose your bet.

The best hand in this game is a hand that results in a total tile count of NINE
