South Fork res is located about 16 miles south of Elko nv. From Elko take sr 227 for 8 miles to the light. Turn right on sr 228 for 5 miles and turn right at the sign. South Fork res is a Nevada state park with a camp ground, boat launch, portable rest rooms, and a ranger station, located around the lake. Fees are charged for everything.
The fishery at the lake is managed by the Nevada div. of Wildlife. It is stocked regulary with Rainbow, Brown, and cutthroat trout. The lake also supports Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Chanell Catfish, and a few Bluegill. South Fork is a popular fishery and water sports recreation area.
Fishing is usually pretty good here with the lake open to fishing all year. Trolling, bank fishing, and float tubes are all very popular ways to catch fish in the lake. The south end of the lake is a no wake speed limit area, that provides a plesant angeling experence free from jet skis.
Many methods take trout from these waters:
Shore fishing: Use power bait, worms, eggs, slip bobbers work good here. Good luers are, silver and red or blue spoons, rooster tails, panther martins, and rapalas. Red Green or black woolly worms are good flies to use.
Trolling:attractor rigs, Rapalas, flat fish,and luers mentioned above all work.
Minnows are illeagal to use as bait in Elko CO.
The smalmouths hang out around drop offs, and the rocky areas around the dam. They like black or brown feathered or tube jigs and crawdad immatation luers.
Largemouths are caught in the shallower areas on meps, rooster tails, and other surface luers.
Catfish are mostly caught by the dam in the evening on worms or stink baits.
Ice fishing can be real good. The ice is usually safe by late Dec or Jan. use worms, corn
power bait, or eggs small crappie jigs also work well. the shallower water is usually the best area to fish.
