BILLS WIN 4TH STRAIGHT AFC CHAMPIONSHIP

Bills Rout Chiefs 30-13 - Go to the Dance One More Time!

They said it could never be done. The Buffalo Bills made history by becoming the first and only team to ever make four straight Super Bowls. By beating the Kansas City Chiefs 30-13 before a hometown crowd of 76,642, the Bills were determined to make this Super Bowl appearance a good one.

Thurman Thomas had a hey day, as he rambled 189 yards on 33 rushes and scored three touchdowns. By doing so, he not only set a team record, but he had the second most rushing yards in an AFC Championship game.

The weather was dark and damp, with a game-time temperature of 29 degrees and it drizzled and snowed on and off for most of the game. The Thurmaninator got the Bills on the scoreboard in the middle of the first quarter when he scored from twelve yards out. Joe Montana, the great warrior retread from San Francisco, drove the Chiefs 51 yards down the field in ten plays, but the Bills D came up big and stuffed the Chiefs, forcing them to go for a 31-yard field goal. Nick Lowery was true on that one, and also good on another 31-yard attempt less than two minutes after making the first to pull the Chiefs within one point of the Bills.

The Bills got their offense running again and Thomas was called upon from three yards out and he scored his second of the day to put the Bills up 14-6. Steve Christie finished the scoring in the first half by connecting on field goals from 23 and 25 yards out, putting the Bills up 20-6 at halftime.

Late in the third quarter, the fabled ancient running back for the Chiefs, Marcus Allen, got the Chiefs back in the game with a 1-yard touchdown run. But then the Christie-Thomas show got rolling again. Christie was good on an 18-yard attempt and Thurman scored from 3 yards out and that was it for the scoring.

The Bills defense had a fantastic day pressuring Joe Montana. They got 4 sacks this day for 37 yards in losses! When they had to, the stopped all but one KC drive. The Bills running backs ran for 229 yards, a new team playoff record.

The Bills Jim Kelly had a workman-like day, passing 27 times, completing 17 of them for 160 yards. He had no interceptions. Meanwhile, the great Joe Montana, passed 23 times, completed only 9 for only 125 yards and had two passes picked off.

This game was sweet revenge for when the Chiefs had beaten the Bills in another early winter game in the old War Memorial Stadium back in December of 1966 to prevent Buffalo from going to the first Super Bowl game ever. And now the Bills were off to Atlanta for Super Bowl XXVIII!
