Sabres rediscover offense against Flyers and Canes

For two periods against the Carolina Hurricanes, it appeared as if the Buffalo Sabres were once again reverting back to their sluggish ways. If it weren’t for Ryan Miller’s heroics in the nets, the Canes would have been on their way to a blowout. However, Miller allowed only one puck to get past him and the Sabres were still in the game, even though they had been vastly outplayed.

Miller had given the Sabres a chance to rediscover their scoring touch and in the third period, the Sabres finally found the back of the net...five times! Miller obviously was the savior on this night, as if it weren’t for him, the Sabres would have suffered an embarrassing loss to the Canes who were looking for their first road victory of the season. As it was, the Sabres came back from their 1-0 deficit to win going away, 5-1.

Sabres topple the Big Boys - Flames & Flyers

The Sabres showed that they could stand up to a big tough team when they defeated the Calgary Flames in a shootout Friday night, but the real test would be against the big bad Broad Street Bullies. The Sabres hadn't beaten the Philadelphia Flyers in two years and counting and just a week ago they were embarrassed at home when the Flyers rubbed their faces against the boards with a 5-2 thrashing. The Sabres passed their black & blue test this weekend with flying colors after finally beating the Flyers 3-2 before another vociferous crowd in Philly.

Sabres halt swirling Leafs

The tidal wave of Blue & White roared down the QEW and over the Peace Bridge. What the horde of Leafs fans saw was one of their best performances of the year as they almost stole one from the soaring Buffalo Sabres.

The Leafs, down 2-1, scored with mere seconds left to force an overtime. But then Tim Connolly settled it quick with a OT goal just over a minute into overtime, giving Buffalo a hard-fought 3-2 win over their neighbors to the north. Connolly lifted a shot over Leafs goalie Jonas Gustavsson's shoulder to give the Sabres their 8th win of the season.

Heads need to roll to get Sabres back on track!

Now that the Sabres season is officially over and they are once again headed to the golf course to "perfect their swing," the Sabres need to gut their entire front office, starting with Larry Quinn and then getting someone like Rick Dudley in as the new GM. The only unfortunate thing is that something like this only happens on every other team that fails to measure up, not the Sabres. Tom Golisano is very happy with the 3-headed Monster that is destroying any credibility the team has on the ice. Quinn, Darcy Regier, and Lindy Ruff have been together way too long. There is so much of a comfort level between the three that it translates onto the ice. The players reflect this coziness and have become a soft team.

That "Mr. Softie" moniker that has been given to Sabres goalie Ryan Miller is a better description of the team as a whole than Miller. At least Miller had a better season than last and earned his contract. The rest of the players in the locker room cannot say the same, except maybe for Thomas Vanek and Derek Roy. Outside of those 3, the players had a major meltdown on the ice this season.

Should Ruff & Regier be fired?

Times are tough in Buffalo. The jobless rate is soaring and Buffalo has been ranked in the top ten most miserable cities in this country. Even so, the Sabres fans have been digging deep into their pockets all season to support a team that they need to lift their spirits. The Sabres have failed to do that, and in fact, are making things even more miserable in Buffalo these days.

With companies, large and small, folding, with so many people suddenly thrust out into the cold, losing the jobs and homes, the professional athlete seems to be living on a different planet, unaffected about the chaos going on around them. They get their multi-million dollar contracts and live according to their own rules, and march to their own drum beat. The Sabres players are the prima donnas, the poster children, of how out of touch these pampered athletes are with the world.

With their playoff lives on the line, the Sabres are playing their worst brand of hockey in a decade. They just don't seem to care, and are more interested in their millions sitting snugly in their bank accounts than representing a city that cares so much about them. They just don't realize how privileged they are to just to have a job these days, let alone one that is a game which pays them millions per year.

Lack of firepower sinking Sabres

By Rick Anderson
December 27, 2008

It's been almost a season and a half since Daniel Briere and Chris Drury departed the Sabres and the huge hole they left behind has yet to be filled. The Sabres have not replaced the firepower that they lost when those two left. Add to the mix the loss of Brian Campbell, and the Sabres are lacking enough scoring to propel them into the playoffs this season. It could be their second straight season of sitting out the playoffs.

The lack of firepower was evident in their 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals Friday night. That was the Sabres third straight loss and teetering on the edge of the last playoff position.
