Behind Bowers Mansion is a trail that leads up into the Sierra's to what is called upper and lower Price Lake. I have read some accounts that the hike up to these two Lakes is a easy trek. Having made the trip myself I can honestly say it is not a easy hike, it took me all day to make the trip, and there was some parts of the walk that was very steep. and to there was parts of the trail that disappeared completely leaving an individual wondering if they were still on the right trail. This is especially true where the trail crosses a few creeks. What drew me to this area was stories that I had heard of a lost Gold mine that had been operated by a man by the name of William Price. He would hike up into the area behind Bowers Mansion and then in the spring would come down and catch a stage into Carson City to exchange his gold nuggets for Gold coins. This went on for a number of years until he was an elderly man. A certain amount of attention was drawn to his routine and people attempt to follow him into the mountains to find out where in the mountains was the location of his mine. Price was always able to avoid giving away the location of his Gold mine, but it was noticed that he spent alot of time around the two lakes that are now called by his name. However his reasons for being in the area of these two Lakes could have been something as simple as supplying himself with the catch of the day. The Lakes are located in an area which is called slide mountain. I can vouch for the fact that the country side in these mountains is beautiful, and the Lake is full of trout. Anyone making this trip should not let the 4.5 miles hike fool them, the trail is not well marked and it's easy to get turned around so take a compass or a GPS indicator with you to help in case the need should arise. This is a State park but the trail around the Lakes is not maintain very well and is not for your average tourist.
