We stripped them bare
of all pretension.
Scoured away
the layers of ownership,
like cattle brands of henna.
Now they scrape the jams
in barely heard protestation.
Sturdy picket lines
that bar the way,
stepping aside reluctantly.
One day I will plane them,
make them fit. Eradicating
all resistance and with it
their character and charm.
Kid myself that they belong
to me and my heavy-handed kin.
When in reality these doors
are nature's property.
Only at home
in an ancient forest
of Canadian pine.
