I hate myself and I want to die, the teenagers t-shirt read. Apparently, a junkie called Kurt Cobain said it shortly before his suicide. Maybe that's harsh but without the idolism of a fan that's the way it seems to me, clear cut, no nonsense. I heard Nevermind in the early 90's and a rock legend was conceived or so they tell me anyway, I liked it but never really got it.. Now these teens pay homage to a troubled, suicidal pop star, who took his life when they weren't even in double figures. Maybe I'm too old to understand, maybe it's teenage fascination with death and such like, but I just don't get it. To me this man took the easy way took his own life at twenty-seven, and committed the ultimate crime - left a daughter fatherless. I want to tell them he was just a man, and not much of one at that, if he hadn't died he'd be nothing, a has-been soaked in booze and drugs. In the end he was just a musician, however talented he might have been, he's not a god or a role model just a man who couldn't handle fame. |
