Comments:

Jethro Tull's 1989 album "Rock Island" actually contains some really nice songs. The group still strives for the tougher end of the rock-genre which the group entered on the quite successful predecessor "Crest of a Knave" from 1987.

In some cases, however, the band seems too cramped to maintain a hard rock expression, where a more gentle and acoustic approach might have suited some individual songs better. One perceives, as in the predecessor, a fascination with Dire Straits / Mark Knopfler. Anderson does in fact, in many cases, sound like Knopfler.

I think the group is best when there is room for melody and acoustic guitars, and the "hero guitars" and speedy exercises on the keyboard appear with moderation. Fortunately, there are songs that do not suffe too much from the inclination of the aforementioned. "Another Christmas Song" is a really great and melodic song you’re very likely to want to hear again as soon as it’s finished.

More songs have their roots in folk music tradition and are as such quite melodic. On the longer numbers there are elements from both folk and hard rock, and there is a diligent use of shifts in beat and dynamics; something that group has been known for throughout most of their career. In addition to the excellent "Another Christmas Song" I would like to highlight "Ears of Tin", "Heavy Water" and "The Whaler's Dues" as favourites.
