Comments:

REM's debut album "Murmur" from 1983 is in many ways a musical milestone. First of all, naturally, because it is an excellent album, but also because it was one of the first albums which to great distinction, put together elements of folk, country and punk and thus was trendsetting for many bands in the middle of the 1980s. At the same time it is an album characterized by intelligent songwriting, and it comes out very confidently in its expression that one may find it hard to believe that it actually is a debut album.

The album is well produced, although it may not quite have the crisp sound that characterizes most of the group's later albums.

The highlights are many; not least catchy upbeat songs like "Sitting Still", "Shaking Through", "Laughing" and of course the single " Radio Free Europe "- yes this was before the fall of ”The Iron Curtain”. There are very melodic songs like "Talk About the Passion" and the different "We Walk". There are also songs that may not be as readily recognizeable; in this category you might put "Pilgrimage" and "Moral Kiosk".

In short: "A milestone" which still seems appeling and relevant.
