Taking part in anything Badfinger is a pleasure to me. I am teaching a History of Rock 'n' Roll class this summer here at Dickinson State University. One of the lectures is going to be about the music business--the only business that survives by eating its young--and the Badfinger story is going to be at the center of it. You cannot imagine the joy of seeing that there are people out there keeping their memory and music alive!It is a travesty that a group that gave us so much indelible music as a band--not including Pete and Tommy's "Without You"--has not been considered for the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame! This band was so horribly victimized by the business that the fact that they managed to produce timeless music in the face of all of--i.e. "Lonely You" or "Know One Knows" or "Lay Me Down"--is a testament to what made the band great. Besides, how can one discuss the power pop movement of the late 1970s, and the influence of bands such as Cheap Trick, Raspberries, or The Cars, without a nod to the pioneers of the genre, Badfinger's "No Matter What."
How can Badfinger fans be mobilized to influence the Hall to induct the band?
The set that I have made for myself is 4 CD's in length and tries to place tracks--as is possible to determine in recorded order. This has been done to listen to the evolution of the band. Sometimes the most popular tracks are not the ones that should go on a set in order to chart the progression.
