Grateful Dead was an American psychedelic rock band. The band was formed in 1965 in San Francisco from the debris of other groups. Grateful Dead was known for their unique and eclectic songwriting which fused elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, country and jazz - and at concerts for long jam sessions where the improvisation-like style was especially characteristic. Grateful Dead had a releatively stable lineup until 1995, when frontman Jerry Garcia died.
Grateful Dead had many enthusiastic followers, and some followed the band from concert to concert for years. They were called "deadheads" and were known for their total dedication to their music. They named the band The Dead.
