Though the Buffalo Springfield was a short-lived group that only lasted just over two years, they are alongside the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers among the most influental bands in the early folk/country-rock.
The band was formed in Los Angeles 1966 by guitarist and singer Steve Stills, Richie Furay ( guitar, vocals ), Neil Young ( guitar, vocals ), Dewey Martin ( drums ) and bassist Bruce Palmer.
From their 1966 debut album, the Stills song "For What It's Worth", was chosen as a single and it became a big hit ( their only ). The group had three talented songwriters in Stills, Young, and Furay, but they also had strong conflicting egos, so their lineup was changed several times. Young left the group for periods until they finally disbanded in 1968.
Key Band Members:
Steve Stills: Born 1945, vocals, guitar. Original member. Stills is a fine guitarist and a competent songwriter. He wrote their hit-single "For What it´s Worth". After the Buffalo Springfield split up he has achieved great succeses both as a solo artist and within the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young framework.
Richie Furay: Born 1944, guitar and vocals. Original member. Began writing songs for the group after the first album.
Neil Young: Born 1945 in Canada, guitar and vocals. Original member. Young has become one of the greatest artist in American rockmusic. He has writen numerous great songs, and achieved great success with his highly influental albums through four decades .
Bruce Palmer: Born 1946 in Canada, bass. Original member. Palmer was in and out of the group before finally leaving in early 1968.
Dewey Martin: Drums and vocals. Original member.
Jim Messina: Born 1947, bass. Replaced Palmer in 1968.
Rusty Young: Steel-guitar . Joined in early 1968.
