Class Schedule

We Run the Following Classes:

About the Yellowknife Canine Centre:

The Yellowknife Canine Centre’s philosophy is to provide effective, but humane training methods for dog owners.

Many people think obedience classes are for the dog, the reality is, they are for people!

The Yellowknife Canine Centre is owned and operated by Laura Debassige.
A dog fancier since childhood, Laura has trained and competed with her dogs in Canadian Kennel Club obedience trials. An active member of the community, Laura joined the Gold City Kennel Club in January, 1988 and began teaching classes in 1989. Laura is a two-time recipient of Pedigree’s CKC Community Service Award and a published writer on canine training and behaviour. When she’s not spending time with dogs, Laura works full time as a Program Officer with the Department of Canadian Heritage.

Classes:
Classes are designed to promote owner awareness and responsible pet ownership. Positive reinforcement techniques are used and classes provide a safe environment for the socialization and training of your dog.

All dogs must have current vaccinations and family participation is not only welcome, it is encouraged!

My goal is not to train people to have an obedience champion, but to have a well, mannered member of the family, who is welcome in the community.

Kindergarten (Puppy) Classes:
This course is designed for puppies up to 6 months of age. Classes are designed to allow optimal socialization with people and dogs. In addition, the foundation of basic obedience is established – sit, down, stay, heel, recall, stand, and accepting praise and handling from strangers. Puppy manners and dog psychology are also covered to help you and your puppy establish a healthy relationship which with last a lifetime.

Course length: 6 weeks – 1 hour/once a week
Course cost: $80.00

Pre-Basic and Basic Obedience:
For basic obedience, dogs are divided into two groups
dogs 6 – 12 months of age,
and dogs 1 year and older.
This is to allow younger dogs to work and socialization within their own age group.

Basic classes are for handlers and dogs with little or no previous training. Handlers will be instructed in obedience basics – sit, down, stay, heel, recall, stand, and accepting praise and handling from strangers. Dog psychology, behaviour and good manners are also covered.

Course length: 7 weeks – 1 hour/once a week
Course cost: $90.00

Advanced Obedience:
This course is designed for people wanting to go beyond the basics, perhaps a CKC obedience title.

Course length: 7 weeks – 1 hour/once a week
Course cost: $90.00

Behaviour Consultation and Modification:
Living with Man’s Best Friend can prove to be a challenge, and as a result, here may be problems you are unable to solve yourself.

If your puppy of dog has become a behavioural monster the Yellowknife Canine Centre can help.
