Am I Really Called?

I believe this is a common question among the Christian community, especially for those in leadership positions in the church.  To answer your question…yes you are.  But there is another spectrum to this simple question that seems to be making its way through the church today.  And that is the belief that you are not called to a certain area of the church, therefore you have no responsibility concerning that ministry.  We want to boldly say that is not the attitude of Christ, nor the kind of mind-set that God desires for his people to operate in.  The people of God, his Body, have a responsibility to see that all the ministries of the church are in operation and carried out in the spirit of excellence.  We, as leaders, must no longer pass the responsibility to our brother or sister in Christ.  You and I, as fellow Christians must stand up and begin to do our part in the local church God has placed us in.

Where are our hearts really focused?  What are your true motives for the work you have been doing in God’s Kingdom?  Are you afraid for God to show you the real stuff underneath your exterior?  He has already revealed what is underneath…by the attitude you have shown concerning the things of God.  We cannot sit in our pew service after service and trust God to bring in the ones we’ve been praying for when we ourselves are lazy concerning the practical issues of our local body.  God does not operate that way my friend.  God is an orderly God and he works through the channels that he has outlined in his Word.

So what if your spiritual authority asks you to do something within your local body that you just don’t feel “called” to do?  First of all, recognize this is your spiritual authority.  In most cases, you would not be asked to do anything contrary to God’s Word.  But weigh it out anyway.  Does it edify the Body?  Will it cause spiritual harm?  Just because it brings you a little discomfort doesn’t mean that you are to back away.  Look at David when he was to face Goliath.  He didn’t drop out of the fight just because the armor didn’t fit correctly.  He stuck in there, got the materials and resources that were familiar to him and got the job done.  And yes, he trusted God to be with him.  And God was right there!  It is time for you and I to stop making the excuse of not being called to this area or not feeling lead by God’s spirit to do certain things.  We should be willing to sacrifice ourselves and our feelings of inadequacy, and let God begin to mature us for a real deep work.

What would have happened if Gideon had decided to go home?  Would they ever be victorious?  If so, how much longer would it have taken?  He was considered the least of his household, therefore surely he probably felt worthless.  But God wanted to use him.  God wants to use you as well.  So why do you insist on telling God that you can’t?  He says you can!  Where is your faith?  Don’t settle down in this comfort zone you have stepped into.  Come out of it and begin to do the things you are supposed to do for God.

Take a look at Bro. Jonah…he was a proud man.  And he didn’t feel that he had to obey God’s command.  So he fled.  But God knew where he was and planned a route for him to take that would humble his heart.  You know the story…he eventually went to Ninevah like he was told to do.  But notice that he went with a hardened spirit.  Yes, God still used him and great repentance was evident throughout the city, however, look at the rebuke Jonah received because of his attitude.  Where are you in this picture?  Are you feeling the same as Jonah?  Don’t flee from what is being asked of you if it is within the boundaries of God’s Word.  It may be that God wants to enlighten you and bring you into greater knowledge of various areas of ministry.  Don’t close your spirit to the creativeness of God in your life.  And don’t be guilty of the Jonah attitude.

Do everything with a spirit of excellence, NO MATTER HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT IT.  If you will give God the opportunity, he will change your outlook, and you know he will.  No more excuses, and yes that’s exactly what those thoughts are.  You are a leader in your local body and its time that you began to act like the true leader God has made you.
