Quiz #1
Quiz #2
Quiz #3

Setting: The elementary school media center.

Instruction Need: Students need to learn the basics of information literacy if they are going to be lifelong learners in an age of ever increasing information. Today's students lean toward accessing information quickly and that is usually through the Internet. Internet information is not always authoritative or correct. This homepage was designed to help students learn an almost, soon-to-be forgotten art and that is using printed materials such as the encyclopedia or any other information using guide-words, indexes or any other printed information source.

Students need to learn the basics of printed information searching in order to do in-depth homework and research assignments.

Learning Objectives: To help students comprehend topics that can be researched in printed materials such as an encyclopedia. To show students how to apply alphabetical ordering and guide words to find entries. To lead students in analyzing pertinent information in printed material. To assist students on how to evaluate the difference between the dictionary and an encyclopedia. Finally to help students comprehend the severity of plagiarism.

Some things to think about:

  1. How to use guide and entry words.
  2. How to read and synthesize information into a concise answer.
  3. How to use a dictionary that gives pronunciation, part of speech, short definitions, and sometimes an example of sentences.
  4. How to use an encyclopedia that provides an in-depth summary of subject material and is more commonly used when doing research papers, reports, and in-depth homework assignments. Choosing the correct encyclopedias alphabetically in order to find answers quickly to questions is success for a student's informational skills.

* The quizzes provided will help to assist students in their self-assessment of information literacy and provide an appreciation for how much information is provided by printed materials such as an encyclopedia and other printed materials.
