CAIRO

The city of Cairo along with its outer burroughs boasts a population of 17 million. The land that was once the bread basket of the ancient world cannot feed itself without emporting grain from other countries.

Rooftops

We were struck both by the condition of the buildings as well as by the abundance of satellite dishes.

Egypt is ninety percent Muslim. Most of the remaining ten percent of the population is of the Coptic faith, an ancient form of Christianity.

Mosque

The pyramids were originally covered with a layer of white limestone, but to see that limestone covering today, you need to visit the palaces and mosques of Cairo.

Silent Sentinels

On the west side of Cairo, the pyramids keep a silent watch over the city.
