Mortifying The Eyes
The rule is simple.
Rule - You get one free look.
Let me explain. In travelling, driving, riding a bicycle there is a need to be aware of what is happening around you. So, you get one look. Face it, most of the time your eyes are wandering. If you see something that causes desire, or has the potential to cause desire, then don't look again - unless it is a matter of necessity for driving. Even then, you should be able to hold your gaze to the other automobile and not its occupants.
If you see it, you will want it. If you want it, you will sin. Follow the rules for custody of the eyes. Just one free look. When that temptation to look again hits you simply present this thought before yourself:
"If I were to die in the next few moments, would I want to die looking at and desiring this object? Should I face my Creator, the Eternal God with this look as my last?"
By the time you finish this little thought, the moment will have passed and the person will probably be out of sight. Hint - you may want to write that thought down and carry it with you.
No Free Looks on T.V. or Magazines
Forget it here. It is better to turn off the television. There isn't much that can edify you on the tube except for Mother Angelica. The same with videos. You have to learn new methods of recreation. Hey, here is a thought - spiritual reading!!! For a soul thirsting for God, this is a good relaxing past time. If you are married, then spend time with the kids. Get them away from the tube also so that they aren't starting bad habits.
