In 1998, I have spent two months backpacking in Indonesia. I started my trip by taking a ferry from Penang in Malaysia across the Strait of Malacca to Medan in Sumatra. Then I traveled by land down south, took a ship to Java. In Java, I continued to travel by land from west to east, then took another ship to Sulawesi. Again it was land traveling (except for islands) from south to north. Exactly two months I left the country by ferry to East Malaysia.
