Travelled by plane from Heathrow. My open jaw ticket,
flying into Prague and out of Budapest cost a bargain
£120, a deal got from STA Travel.
Prague - Cesky Krumlov
July 19th
This was a 4 and a half train ride from Prague's main
station, Hlavni Nadrazi, changing in Ceske Budejovice.
The low fare of around £4 is indicative that train passes
are not worth getting for this region.
Cesky Krumlov - Telc
July 22nd
I got a bus back to Ceske Budejovice (1 hour), then another
to Telc (2 hours).
Telc - Olomouc
July 24th, 1998
This involved a 2 hour bus ride to Brno, then a train from
Brno to Olomouc (1 and a half hours).
Olomouc - Krakow
July 26th, 1998
The most complicated leg of my journey, this consisted of
four stages. First a train from Olomouc to Ostrava, then
another to Cesky Tesin on the Polish border (total £2.50).
I then walked over the border to Cieszyn in Poland. Finally,
I got a bus from here to Krakow (£3).
Krakow - Stary Smokovec
July 29th, 1998
I got a bus from Krakow to Zakopane, the main Polish town in
the Tatra mountains, then another to Stary Smokovec (total £4).
Stary Smokovec - Budapest
August 1st
This was the most expensive part of my journey, as it involved
an international train. I got a local train from Stary Smokovec
to Poprad, then a train direct from here to Budapest (£13). This
takes 6 and a half hours.
Budapest - London
August 5th
This was the return leg of my open jaw plane ticket.
