HIGHLIGHTS

  • Cesky Krumlov
An amazing little town 200km south of Prague. I could have stayed here for weeks.

  • Tatra Mountains
Somewhere completely different, a breath of fresh air (literally) after lots of towns, castles, etc. Well marked paths with magnificent views.

  • Budapest
Justed edged it as my favourite city over Prague and Krakow. Loads to see and a great atmosphere.

  • Introduction
I travelled around (a small part of) Eastern Europe in the summer of 1998, for three weeks. I decided I definitely wanted to see Prague and Budapest, so then planned a route inbetween.

This section of the web site gives information about my trip, including where I went, where I stayed, where I ate and how much things cost.

    Route
This section contains a map of the area I went to, showing the route I took. It also gives details of how long I spent where and the transport I used to got about.

    Prague
Capital of the Czech Republic, Prague is full of outstanding architecture. Its a city best appreciated on foot - there's something new and interesting around every corner. Oh yes, and theres lots (and lots) of tourists there in the summer.

    Cesky Krumlov
Four hours on the train or bus, south from Prague, is this great small town. Cesky Krumlov is well known now due to many guidebook recommendations, but don't let that put you off, its still not that overrun with people.

    Telc and Olomouc
I've grouped these two together as I only stayed in both towns for a couple of nights. Telc has a beautiful Renaissance style square, whilst Olomouc has a busy student scene.

    Krakow
Krakow now seems to be almost as popular as Prague, especially with younger people. The night scene is great, although you do pay about three times for a beer compared to the Czech Republic.

    Tatra Mountains
Lots of well marked paths (and cable cars on some routes if you're feeling lazy!), with woodland scenery eventually giving way to magnificent mountain views.

    Budapest
Budapest is more laid back than Prague, but otherwise has a similar array of historical sights and interesting things to see.
