The alpine botanical garden was founded in the 1954, by the botanist V. Rivera, to accomodate the main floristic entities of the karstic Gran Sasso mountain.
It is located 2110 m a.s.l., near the astronomic observation-post of Campo Imperatore, at the basis of the "Corno Grande", which is the highest tip of the Apennines, 2914 m a.s.l.

The Garden, as alpine research centre, stimulated various biological studies on flora and ecophysiology of alpine, as well as medical and pasture plants. The Garden is located in the Gran Sasso National Park, of which it represents the most interesting scientific and didactic attraction.

At present, entrusted with the "Dipartimento di Scienze Ambientali" of the University of L'Aquila, it is reorganizing as a living museum, specialized in the biological education and in regional plants conservation.

The garden harbors the main endemites or subendemites (Alps-central Apennines; italian-balkanic), medicinal plants and glacial relicts of the central Apennines.

In recent years a great interest aroused by numerous public and private cultural institutions, both foreign and italian, for the Gran Sasso Alpine Garden, which is one of the few altitudinal garden in the Apennines, and the only one in the central Apennines. Moreover, it represents a remarkable national patrimonial estate, which occupies a noteworthy position in the Italian nature culture, either for the interest by famous scientists (Rivera, Giacomini a.o.) or for its geographical and altitudinal position, which supports the presence of "noble" and systematically interesting altitudinal plants.
