The Du Bandia Grasail 1970 Book of Shadows
A Few Brief ExcerptsThe peculiar abbreviations and style of printing of the Du Bandia Grasail BOS copy I received are those of Jim Baker (Summanus), the founder of Du Bandia Grasail. I have prefaced this material with the first letter Jim Baker wrote to me in 1974 regarding the Book of Shadows. Some of the current crop of Alexandrian leaders in the US are unhappy with me over the publication of these few excerpts, an attitude that is at odds with that of Jim Baker and Alex Sanders. Its disheartening how "fundamentally" the mentality of some of the US Alexandrians has declined since the days of Du Bandia Grasail. When Jim had the BOS sent to me, he told me to take it apart and use what I wanted to make my own BOS. Consequently, I tossed most of the Du Bandia BOS years ago. Here are a few fragments I still have.
Ralph DesRosiers, the High Priest of Du Bandia Grasail, who sent me the Book of Shadows through the mail in 1974 died in 1997. Professor Jim Baker, a historian and the founder of Du Bandia Grasail, has grown embittered over being deceived about the origins and nature of Wicca, and is now one of its biggest critics.
The Law It is truly Wiccan because it embodies
the marks and tradition of the Wicca.
It is truly an Order because it has a Rule,
and within that Rule are other measures.
It is truly perpetual because it traces its sources
to the First Rivers that sprang from the Primal Sea.
It is truly Ancient because it puts no boundary
on the limitless Past and on the unlimited Future.
The RuleWho Rules?
The Rule, as a Rule. How much does it Rule?
It rules all men, all creatures, all worlds. How does the Rule begin?
How does the Rule end?
There is no beginning, no ending. Then what does the Rule measure?
It measures all things, and all things are measures to be taken. How shall I take the measure?
Let one hand be upon the Infinite and one foot upon the Finite:
then Define by putting thy measure in the balance. How shall I weigh the Balance?
When both scales are equal thou art true. And when they do not balance?
Both are in error.Who shall take a Measure?
Him who will, and let him prove it as he will. And if he prove wrongly?
Let another say, "This is not the Hour,"
if it be in that hour,
or, "This is not the Day,"
if it be in some other time. And how shall the Balance be resolved?
By Truth is best, but if best is lacking,
then by the Power of Numbers.
And if Numbers are lacking,
then by the Power of Rank be it resolved.
This is just, for a measure must find its own mean. Therefore, let there be a Book of Measures
in which is kept all measures within the Rule
except that which is Immeasurable,
which is Beyond Understanding,
which is Within Us,
where it may be Proved Beyond Doubt.

On the Phases of Ye Moon In ye period of ye waxing moon, from ye 1st day of ye new moon to ye 1st day of ye full moon, are done all spells yt deal wth the beginning or increase of affairs, as seed planting, beginning a new or strengthening an old love affair, getting a new job or procuring an increase in luck, materials and so forth.
In ye period of ye waning moon, from ye 2nd day of ye full moon to ye day before ye new moon, are done all spells yt deal wth ye ending or decling or banishment of affairs, as curses, ending love affairs, dispelling illnesses, attaining the cessations of any thing.
Within ye periods are the four quarters, and of yse 2 take on the redoubled effect of their time, as from ye 1st quarter to ye full is most potent for positive effects, and ye last quarter to ye new moon is ye time for balck magic and had best be left alone.
It is moot whether a black spell will be as effective in ye first 1/2, or whether it will be neutralized, but it is known yt any positive spell performed in ye last 1/2, especially ye last quarter, will be weakened, perverted, or even reversed by ye waning situation.A sanctuary shall thou make to me, that I dwell among you, according to all that I show thee; the pattern of the Temple and the pattern of all the furnishings.
The Wiccan Temple The covenstead can be anywhere on ground or below it preferably when it is in a building. But in the open it should be near running water or a forest.
When in a building, as large a circle as possible should be marked out on the floor and should measure 3, 7, 13 or a multiple of any of these measurements. On the perimeter of this circle will be marked out five points 72 degrees apart, one of the points placed on the North Cardinal.
A circle of a half the diameter of the first circle is drawn inside it using the same center, and again five points are marked out 72 degrees apart, but with one point placed on the southern cardinal.
The two circles are joined point to point to form the five-pointed star or pentacle. In the southern valley of this pentacle will be placed the major altar.
This should be a rectangular shape, approximately 7 feet long and 2 feet 6 inches wide by 3 feet 3 inches high. It may or may not stand on a dais.
Upon this Altar is laid the Living Altar. The Major Altar has one colored Altar cloth over it, colored according to the Ritual observance, and the Living Altar none.
The Head of the Major Altar will, or should, face the centre of the circle and the Major Altar should have a 3 foot space surrounding it.
An imaginary line running through the longitudinal axis of the Major Altar should ne North to South. To the Western side is the Altar left (female) and to the Eastern side is the Altar right (male). The Altar foot is the southernmost end. The Minor Altar should be placed near to the southern extremity of the circle or building, and should be of convenient size to hold the regalia and working tools. This Altar is covered wth a black cloth. Both Altars are made from any suitable material, rock, stone, metal or wood, but no bones or relics of the dead are to be put into them while they are being made or afterwards.
The Temple proper should have a décor of red, black, silver, grey or green.
The colors of the lamp should be variable and not of a blue color only.
The Minor Altar should be kept lit throughout the entire ceremony.
Hang behind the minor Altar an embroidered tapestry or painting. There should be various motifs for different ceremonies and seasons.
The Sanctum Sanctorum should be a separate room or at least divided from the Temple proper and have a screened doorway.
A separate cloakroom for the coven is essential as the Brotherhood and their visitors should have privacy to change their apparel.
The Temple should be laid out in this manner, keeping as near as possible to the plan. The lines of the pentacle need not be marked on the floor of the Temple.
Amoun - Ra "Come down, O God, and warm our souls, Our hearts are yearning, our minds receptive. See the tall grass which grows around us. The flowers are ever grateful for their abundant life. Make way now wth graceful speed. The Goddess has veiled your glory until another dawning. She now casts silver in spite of gold. The stars, her hosts, proceed to serve, Giving our future way foretold -- and now the tides from which we left Have ebbed their way unperturbed."
The Rite of the Temple The four Elders who officiate shall stand at the four quarters as follows:
The High Priest shall stand in the East, the Priest shall stand in the West, the Scribe shall stand in the North, the Devoted Servant shall stand in the South. All stand until the H.P. has taken his place in the East.
The H.P. says:
"Within the Temple are the Pathways to many chambers. Within these chambers are stored many treasures to which you can attain as they are unfolded unto you. Let them be unfolded by you, for the Tree of Life thrives upon the leaf it casts to the earth."
The Scribe sprinkles the circle and says:
"This Temple is purified with water."
The Devoted Servant casts the circle, and says:
"The circle is purified with fire."
The deputy Priest goes to the altar, lights the candles and says:
There is but one Light and none but that of Karnayna. Let us make a beginning."
The Scribe goes to the West and says:
"We have gathere in Perfect Love and Perfect Trust to seek knowledge to prepare our souls for the blessing which comes through karnayna."
The deputy chierf says:
"Oh Karnayna from whom all strength and wisdom flows, enter our souls that we may see and seeing understand. Illuminate us that the rediance of thy presence may be made manifest in our service to thee."
The deputy Priest and the Scribe return to their places.
The H.P. says: (stabbing sword in center of ye circle)
"I dedicate the Temple in Perfect Love and Perfect Trust."
All work is now undertaken.
The Circle of Divination Before using the crystal, pendulum, tarot, etc. the altar is set up in the usual way. Divining tools should be placed upon the alter. Four candles are placed before the altar at the start. This rite is used for any kind od augury or scrying mirror, cauldron scrying, palmistry, rune casting, and many others. Teaching of divination may also be done within the circle. When all are in the circle the H.Ps. will light the candles and incense, saying:
"Oh friends of the night, Of mist and moonlight, ye who are seldom seen, be with us now and spread apart the veil of being so that we may look beyond."
The priest takes the candles and places then at the west, north, east and south, in that order. The priestess will choose four of those within the circle to divine. The four chosen will present the symbols of the elements to the quarters. The one chosen to present the water symbol shall take it from the altar and stand holding it towards the North, East, South, and West, and circumambulate the circle deosil while saying:
"Oh elementals of water, harken to your sign. Open the windows of where and when and let us see beyond."
The same should be said for earth, air and fire. The priestess takes the wand to salute towards the south, invoking:
"Oh Queen of Magic and Silence, we have gathered the spirits of nature to help us to delve into what lies beyond. We ask that you make strong and keen our inner eyes as we search through the veil. Let only influences which are good enter within the circle. The rite is yours, oh Lady of Mystery. Be wth us we ask. Blessed Be All. Blessed Be."
Now is the time for divination. The priest and priestess will aid, guide and teach as necessary. When the divinations are at an end, the priest shall stand wth the wand outstretched to South and salute, saying:
" We do thak all who have been with us here, those whom we can see and those who are not of ys world. We thank Thee, Blessed One."
He shall direct the Lords of the Watchtowers to put out the cardinal lights. Then he shall put out the lights on the later, saying:
"Ys ritual is done. Blessed be All. Blessed Be."
Great Rite (Symbolized by an upright triangle over an inverted pentagram)
The circle is formed and all are properly prepared.
The object of work is proclaimed deosil around circle.
High Priestess assumes Osiris position.
She says:
"Blessed Be. Ere I dare to proceed wth this sublime Rite, I must beg purification at thy hands." ($$).
Adjust Cords and C. Proclaim to the quarters.
"Hear ye, Mighty Ones; twice consecrated and holy ________________, High Priestess and Witch Queen (High Priest and Magus) is properly prepared, and will now proceed to erect the sacred Altar."
Deosil circumambulation. ($$). ($).
H.Ps.: "Now again I must beg purification."
Adjusts Cords and deosil circumambulation. ($).
"Now I must reveal a Great Mystery."
High Priestess assumes Osiris position. ($$).
"Assist me to erect the ancient altar, at which in days past all worshipped, the Great Altar of all things. For in the Old Times, woman was the Altar. Thus was the Altar made and placed, and the Sacred Place was the Point within the Center of the Circle. As we have of old been taught, that the point within the Centre is the Origin of all things, therefore should we adore it. ($). Therefore, whom we adore, we also invoke:
Oh Circle of Stars ($) Whereof our Father is but the younger brother, ($) marvel beyond imagination, soul of infinite space before whom time is ashamed, the mind bewildered and the understanding dark; not unto thee may we attain unless Thine Image we love ($) Therefore, by seed and root, and stem and bud, and leaf and flower and fruit do we invoke thee! O Queen of Space, O Jewel of Light, Continuous One of the Heavens ($) Let it be ever thus, that men speak not of Thee as One, but as some; and let them not speak of Thee at all, since thou art continuous; for Thou art the point within the circle, which we Adore. ($) The point of life without which we would not be. ($) And in this way truly are erected the Holy Twin Pillars. ($) In beauty and in strength were they erected, to the wonder and glory of all Men. ($) Altar of Mysteries manifold: The Sacred Circle's Secret point, thus do I sign thee as of old (upright triangle over inverted pentagram) With the kisses of my lips anoint ($) open for me the secret way; the Pathway of Intelligence between the Gates of Night and Day, beyond the bounds of Time and Sense. Behold the Mystery aright --
Five are the points of fellowship; here where the Lance and grail unite, and feet and knees, and breast and lip." ($)
