Goals & Objectives:
This course is designed primarily as a support course for the nursing major. This course will focus on the principles and applications of microbiology in the process of disease. The course will also cover microbiology and its application to a career in nursing. The topics covered in this course will include identification of microorganisms, an introduction to their metabolism and a systemic approach to diseases caused by microorganisms. Attention is given to clinical correlation and application to health care practices. The specific goals of this course are as follows:
Attendance in class and lab is mandatory. All absences require a written excuse. If a student misses 2 classes, a written warning will be issued. If a student continues to miss class after receiving a written warning, they will be penalized 5% from their final grade.
Four exams will be given during the semester. Each exam will consist of essay questions, short answer questions, problem solving questions and multiple choice questions.
Exams must be taken on the scheduled day. Makeups will be given, however a 10% penalty will be assessed for unexcused absences. All absences require a written excuse. Chronic offenders (those who miss more than one exam or quiz) will not be permitted further make-ups.
**No makeup for the lab practical or final exam**
Several assignments will be given over the course of the semester.
Please follow these guidelines when turning in homework assignments:
1) Write name on each page
2) Justify answers with references from the textbook.
3) Please write legible. If you have handwriting that is difficult to read you may be asked to use a word processor for homework assignments.
**Late assignments will not be accepted**

Lab attendance is Mandatory. Failure to consistently attend lab will result in a failing grade. **Make-ups will NOT be given.**
A recitation will be held each Friday from 3:00-4:00 and are a mandatory requirement for the microbiology course. The recitation session will be used to answer question and work on problems and case studies pertaining to material covered in class that week. Recitations will NOT be mandatory for any student with an 85% or better in the course.
