Although I enjoy watching television, it's a medium I can rarely get excited about. That said, one of the few un-missable programmes in my schedule has always been Ally McBeal.
I find it humourous, intelligent, perceptive, often poignant and highly entertaining - and fortunately the same can be said for Tim Appelo's book "Ally McBeal: The Official Guide".
This comprehensive book is filled with information about the TV show that took both the US and the UK by storm after its premiere in 1997. It includes more than 400 colour photographs, interviews with all the regular cast members, writer and producer, and a complete précis of all the episodes in the first and second seasons, which include lists of all the songs performed in each.
Appelo is a seasoned writer on entertainment and pop culture and his book is cram packed full of interesting facts. For every one of the main cast members there is a profile of the character, an interview with the actor or actress who plays that part and a wealth of biographical information on them, including their credits for other film and television appearances. There are 'Fishisms' and 'McBealisms' galore, not to mention details of all the weird and wacky objects invented by super secretary Elaine.
Of course, if you are not a fan of Ally McBeal the TV show, then you will have absolutely no idea what I am talking about. If, however, you do know what I'm talking about, then can I recommend that you seek out this fun book without delay. It's irreverent, off the wall and will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about the Ally experience - and more!
