Derek's Hopes For His Life

"...to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory." -- Howard Zinn

"You never change the existing model by fighting it. Instead create a new model that makes the old one obsolete." -- Buckminster Fuller

I want my life to be as good as it can be. I want to have a place where I can feel I am home, a place built with my input. I want to behave well toward other people, both directly when they are with me and indirectly, when they are miles away. I don't want the end of my life to be accompanied by the feeling, "I wish I had lived after my dreams." I want my dreams to be realistic, fair to others and actually heathy for me, my friends, community and the planet.

I love to eat fresh fruit and do a fair amount of work to make a garden a place with plenty of fresh fruits of all sorts year round.

I think "tribal villages", built from natural materials are very beautiful and dream of a garden one day having that look.

I love communication and I love learning. Alanah and I presently plan to take a year off here and there from a garden to live for a year in a different country. Mostly it is for the excitement and learning that we are so motivated. Eastern Europe is the area we are most interested in living in first as neither of us have ever been there very long.

I want a garden to be able to generate income without its members having to leave.

I dream of one day having access to a large round-the-world sailboat that various intentional communities would jointly own and use and keep continously sailing. I don't have that project as a priority now and may never get to it, but it waits in my mind, none the less.
