TIAN DI (1994) back to main
Directed by David Lai Dai-Wai; starring Andy Lau Tak-Wah, Damian Lau Chung-Yun, Cherie Chan Siu-Ha, Kam Si-Kit, Ku Po-Ming, Faye Yu.
Spectacular, beautifully filmed and brilliantly lit variation on THE UNTOUCHABLES. Andy Lau plays an upright cop who sets out to do away with several triad gangs almost singlehandedly. Of course, he, his family and colleagues prove anything but untouchable. One of the most physically handsome HK movies in many years, with serviceable performances (notably by Damian Lau), incredible shoot-outs (way, way over the top) and lavish production values. HK VCD is slightly cut, omitting some of the gore.
Andy Lau's patent "intense look".
He has cast his eye on the city's triads
(Note: The Chinese word for
triad is "Tian Di Wai").
Friend and foe are not always easy to identify. Especially considering villain
Damian Lau's day job.
TIAN DI is one of the most beautifully
filmed HK movies of recent memory.
Even in supposedly unsensational
scenes like this, the lighting is
brilliant.
For the gore fans, there's quite a bit
to chew on as well. The VCD is cut, though.
This still shows only a portion of
a gigantic outdoor location set used
to good effect in TIAN DI.
It's unwise not to listen to triad bosses.
Tragedy often ensues. This lady is
not the first victim, and certainly not the last.
Incredible stuntwork and
shootouts throughout, this still taken
from the climactic cinema massacre.
And a massacre it is.
