INTRUDER (1997) back to main
Directed by Chan Gang-Cheong; starring Wu Chien-Lien, Lai Yiu-Cheung, Moses Chan, Wong Man-Wai, Yuen Bun, Lai Yung-Tun.
The very definition of a "sleeper", INTRUDER is a cool, terrifying thriller with plenty of style and creepy atmosphere. More than just a little surprising, considering that its director is better known for his screenwriting credits on recent Stephen Chiao comedies (KING OF COMEDY, GOD OF COOKERY). What makes the film noteworthy - apart from its technical merits -  is Wu Chien-Lien's brilliant portrayal of a pathological killer and torturer (torturess?). If you have seen her in comedies and action films only, you'll be in for something completely different. Even compared to BEYOND HYPOTHERMIA, her performance here is intense.
The usually angelic Wu Chien-Lien in
a change-of-pace role. From her look,
you can see she is up to something.
And what is she up to?
Some torture and bloodletting.
The guy in the wheelchair
is taped and bound. Compared
to Wu's other victims, he
may consider himself lucky.
As if torture wasn't degrading enough,
she makes you repent your sins.
Talk about dysfunctional characters.
Even children are considered easy prey.
The man behind the woman.
But you may have guessed that already.
Who's afraid of the big bad girl?

If you are up to a good scare,
don't watch SCREAM or some
other US teeny-horror junk.
Watch INTRUDER instead.
But note: Be afraid, be very,
very afraid!
