THE DRAGON CHRONICLES: THE MAIDENS OF HEAVENLY MOUNTAIN (1994) back to main
Directed by Andy Chin Wing-Keung; starring Brigitte Lin Ching-Hsia, Gong Li, Cheung Man, Frankie Lam Man-Leung, Norman Chu (Tsui Siu-Keung), Ka Tin-Yi, Liu Kai-Chi, James Pax (Pak Chin-Shek).
If you are in for movies with straightforward plots, then forget THE DRAGON CHRONICLES. I know I have said it elsewhere: neat scripts with clearly drawn plotlines are not the forte of HK movies. But even by the usual "confusion standard", this martial-arts f/x extravaganza is a total muddle! Nevertheless, it's great to look at - though not too great to listen to (or to read from). This lavishly produced "wu-xia" epic was an attempt to launch Mainland star Gong Li's HK career in commercial movies - and it was a complete failure, one of the biggest box-office bombs in the history of Hong Kong cinema. But those who are in for lovely ladies, hilarious special effects, tons of action mayhem, low-brow humour and high production values will have a good time watching THE DRAGON CHRONICLES - as long as they don't think about it for a second!
Plenty of "maidens" (some more, some less maidenish) in this one:
Gong Li (left) and Brigitte Lin as two adorable sisters who adore each other.
... and a less adorable second
Brigitte Lin, the evil one in the sister trio.
You know, the decadent variety.
Cheung Man as a mediocre
martial-arts scholar with high ambitions.
Again, she's responsible for much
of the silliness.
Yet another pretty actress, whose name
eludes me.
Lots of fires and explosions,
and - of course - flying people.
A sizeable part of the budget
was lavished on action, f/x and
large-scale sets like the one on the left.
Too bad they didn't have enough money for a decent script!

"Damn it."

Fans of HK-style nonsense will
nonetheless have a field day.
Two examples of the kind of f/x
to expect from THE DRAGON CHRONICLES (it's difficult to
capture them on stills). Most of them
have to do with light, beams and such.
Handcuffs for Gong Li.
Think about the possibilities!
