THE HAND THAT ROBS THE CRADLE

Children trapped in a nightmare

The Story of Child Protection

It is a warm breezy sunny day and Linda's three children are outside playing. A car pulls up in front of the house where the children are playing. Two people get out of the car and tell the childen to come into the house. To these children the people are strangers and they are not sure if they should listen to the strangers. The children go into the house after the strangers enter. At this point the children are inquisitive. The strangers do not knock, they just open the door and go in.

In the house is a young mother alone, no husband, no boyfirend and no parents. It is just her and she is trying to cope with three young children and is stressed to the breaking point. The workers who now identify themselves as child protection workers inform this mother that they have received a referral and they cannot tell her the identity of the person who made the complaint that is is confidential and as a result of the referral they will have to take her children. Her worst fears are now a reality and the two workers along with two police officers remove her children. They give her a notice of taking into care and head out with the children.

She feels like she is trapped and has lost her children. It is every parents nightmare, out somewhere and they lose thir child, it is like being in a crowded mall and losing site of your child, you panic. This is every parents worst fear to be in out with their children and lose sight of them. It envokes the most terifying emotions a person will ever experience. Horrific thoughts enter your mind, are the children abducted, are they lost, and "are they all right"?

This is the feeling a parent and especially a mother gets. Her stomach has just hit the floor. Her first instinct is fear, her second is rage, and the last is defeat. Where are my children going? Will they be ok? Who are they going to be with? When will we be able to see each other? Many unanswered questions that will go unanswered for some time.

The mother quesions "why" and "who gave you the right to take my children in such a manner" "do I have the right to speak to say no". The workers ignore her and scurry the crying and screaming children to their car and head for a foster home. The young mother stares into the night scared, alone and no where to turn. How did this happen? Why were my children taken and what could I do. Who did this to me?

The children are taken to a foster home and the home can only take two children. One child will have to go else where. No one notifies the mother that her children are split up and in different areas. As far s the workers are concerned the mother does not have the right to know and the courts will deal with it now, they have done their job and they have the children.

This is the start of a long and ardurous battle between this mother and child protection. No one sat and tried to speak to this mother to see what is going on a if they can be of any "assistance" or if they can help her in any way. It is not an option available to her or the children. The rule of least intrusive means nothing as well as the rule "in the best interest of the child", the book is thrown out the window and it is everyone for them selves.

The distraut mother now stands alone in an empty home, stark and silent, like a tomb with no escape in sight. There is no laughter of little children, rooms are dark and empty like the mothers heart. Panic sets in and she wonders how did I get into this nightmare.
