Settlement in the Narracan -Thorpdale district, situated in the Strzelecki Hills south of Moe, began in 1873. The original township of Narracan was founded in 1877 beside McDonalds Track - possibly the first township in the entire Strzeleckis. James Powell started a postal service and registry office at his home. The township of Narracan West was established further along the track (near the site of the world's tallest tree) about 1880 and was renamed Thorpdale a few years later. In 1888 a branch railway line from Moe was completed. However it terminated about 3 km short of Thorpdale township. Furthermore, the line ran beside Narracan Creek, as a result of which the intermediary Narracan station was about 2 km from Narracan township - situated on a ridge along which McDonalds Track ran. Two new townships were established - one named "Warrington" beside the terminus and one beside Narracan station. Warrington was shortly renamed "Thorpdale", the former township of Thorpdale being renamed "Thorpdale South". Several years later, Narracan railway station township was renamed "Narracan", while the original township of Narracan was renamed "Narracan East". The last passenger train on the Thorpdale line ran in 1944 and the last goods train in 1958. The line was dismantled in 1961/2. Thorpdale township still stands, but little now remains of the townships of Narracan East, Narracan and Thorpdale South, some of the buildings having been moved to "Old Gippstown" tourist village at Moe. I aim to include events for the entire Narracan - Thorpdale district. Most pre-1893 events were registered at "original" Narracan (Narracan East).
